Andy @ Allerton Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 What would your version of a perfect televised match be? Mine would be; Before the game; * No prolonged, hyped buildup - just mention of the likely team/formation* Interview with both Managers with no loaded questions During the game * A single Camera, located on the halfway line - which follows the action in widescreen mode* NO Replays* NO Analysis* NO Commentary whatsoever - just crowd noise Half Time * Showing of the formations used/Goals* Showing of other results and goals where allowed Full Time * Showing of the formations used/Goals* Interview with both Managers with no loaded questions* Showing of the league table/cup tables/other results THE END

Des Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 So Andy wants the televised experience to be largely similar to being sat at the match. Whoda thunk it?

Des Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Why would that be a bad thing? Try selling it to a TV company.
theredfella Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Try selling it to a TV company. Well obviously but in terms of what's better for the fan, that way would be great. Sky might respond more positively than we might think, they'd save a packet in wages for their troupe of analytical monkeys.

ITV4 have been showing old editions of The Big Match from the early 80s on Sunday mornings. It's like stepping into another universe. No punditry whatsoever, just showing press stills of games that weren't televised with Elton Welsby/Brian Moore giving you the bare facts of the major incidents. And because only about two or three games were televised, proper extended highlights that last a bit longer than the five or so minutes allocated these days. Looks incredibly old and slow now though. A modern audience couldn't cope with it, imo. Edited May 23, 2008 by Des
Tyler Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 i like that new overhead camera angle that they have taken from american football
pipnasty Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 So Andy wants the televised experience to be largely similar to being sat at the match. Whoda thunk it? When I watch a match live at home on TV, I always piss into a rolled up programme just to re-create that old-school atmosphere. Add a piss week pint and a 7% meat Meat Pie and it is perfect. Throw in a bit of casual racism and it's 1984 all over again!

I like to trash the place afterwards as well, especially if we're playing an away game.
Duncan Disorderly Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I'd agree with most of yer ideas Andy, but I think instant replays would be needed for stuff like offsides, contentious decisions, goals etc. and the obligatory close-up of a bit of totty in the crowd should be a prerequisite.

Mine would be An in depth analysis into the strengths and weaknesses of both sides and how possibly they will counter each other. Radio 5 style commentary i.e a commentator who describes the action solely and a summariser who knows his onions and talks tactics formation. Half time - a discussion of the tactics/formations and discussion about where the game is being won or lost. Replay of major incidents. repeat 1st half for 2nd half Full time - repeat half time, show major incidents in second half. Round up, goals from all the other games. Interviews with the managers who are asked to discuss tactically how the game went. Match day review, highlights of all the other games followed by panel discussion on all the key incidents from the days games, including in depth discussion of the tactics/formations in each game. It would be a long day mind !!!!!

To be honest - the reason I put no replays is because they usually aren't impartial. Whoever is in charge of them gets to choose what to show, for how long, slowed down or to simply ignore the incident and never show it again. The idea with the single camera sweeping back and forth and no replays is (As has been said) to give you the one look at an incident from a pretty decent position in the ground and for you to be able to make your own mind up. There are many instances in todays game which - depending on the angle and the speed - whoever is in control of the editing can try and make your mind up for you. That may be an innocent trait or it may not. I think with much fewer replays that will help the referees - if there is less scrutiny of their decisions with endless moronic replays - then they would be able to get on with their jobs. Make a decision. Move on. And so would we as fans - we see it once - decide what we think and that's an end to it. And yes the odd close ups are a terrific idea.

Redkop Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Radio 5 style commentary i.e a commentator who describes the action solely. Wouldn't that be lovely? I have always wondered how partially sighted/blind people manage to follow what's going on when you have the likes of Andy Gray & Martin Tyler waffling on and on when there's no radio commentary... how the f*** they are called 'commentators' is beyond me. If I had 2 blokes sat in front of me on the Kop waffling on throughout the game like they do... I know I wouldn't be able to resist telling them to STFU.

Guest Ant Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 What has SOS got to do with TV coverage? The SOS is all about what fans want from their Football Club, and football in general, it's about giving fans a voice. If Andy wants to make his 'dreams' come reality then instead of posting on here, he could join the Union and 'have and engine' to drive his ambition of having 'fair' punditry, or whatever he wants from Sky.

Guest Prongsy Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 2:45 Interrupt the program that's showing (possibly woman's beech volleyball) with an announcement that "the footy is going to start in 15 minutes so put your pie in the oven/frozen curry in the microwave, go for a quick piss and grab a beer". 2:55 Build-up starts, they tell you the teams and the reasons for any injuries 2:58 Go pitchside and watch the players faffing about with coins/flags/changing ends/scratching their balls 3:00 Game with sensible, factual and unbiased commentary - obviously have replays and decent camera angles - c***ish otherwise as you're missing out so much. 3:45 Replay of the action 4:00 Back pitchside and wait for the game to kick back off. 4:50 replays of the action, little bit of analasys. 5:00 fin
