CaptainXabi Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) My Chav-supporting friend (stop laughing in the back) think the "majority of your fans would trade Reina for Cech". I said "no chance", so here I am with a poll to (hopefully) prove him wrong. Would you trade Reina for Cech? Edited May 16, 2008 by CaptainXabi
The_MC Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Pepe is a better keeper, and he's more suited to the way we play (due to his pace off the line allowing him to sweep)... so no. Cech is a very good keeper, but overrated imo. The more i watch him the more i think so.
Maldini Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Cech is a much better shot stopper, but Pepe has it over him in most other areas I think. Both are world class though.
st.johns Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I don't think Reina's in Cechs class and only on a Liverpool website would this be debatable.

Guest the Dude abides Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 No. But Cech is a better keeper. Well. He was before the injuries, not so sure now though.

Reina has better ball distribution and is quicker off his line, that's about it. Cech is more commanding, doesn't get found out at corners and as you say a better shot stopper.

Cech is more commanding, doesn't get found out at corners and as you say a better shot stopper. How is he more commanding? Reina's positioning is as good as any keeper I've ever seen, the main reason he doesn't pull off that many spectacular saves is because he's in the right position that he only has to take a couple of steps to save it. He flaps WAY more than Reina too. He's had some horrendous howlers in the last 18 months. Reina is decisive, he goes for the ball and risks looking stupid, but he's not a coward like some other keepers who stay on the line to make themselves look better.

Reina has won the golden gloves (most clean sheets kept) in the premiership for the last 3 seasons - during which he has also played more games than most. Cech has varied between being excellent and awful this season and wasn't that great last season.

Cech has varied between being excellent and awful this season and wasn't that great last season. Cech kept 14 clean sheets in 26 matches just for the record and both the mancs and Chelsea kept more clean sheets than us with 21 each compared to our 18.
Earl Hafler Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I think our defence has been slightly off it this season and yet still Pepe is up there as the best in the league. The best keeper i've seen play for us and i wouldn't swap him for any other in the world. Schmeichel is undoubtedly the best i've ever seen.
Hassony Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 How many howler has Cech dropped since coming back from injury, yet everytime he does it you hear redknapp saying "You don't see Cech doing that every week" Reina for me and I don't really care what fans of other clubs think as they only get their opinions from Sky/ newspapers
Hassony Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Schmeichel is undoubtedly the best i've ever seen.he was amazing, I remember one game away to Newcastle where newcastle should really have scored 5-6 if it wasn't for him

And as with reina, he's not afraid to leave his line. I voted yes. Think we have an excellent keeper in Reina, but cech is marginally better. reina is quicker off his line and his distribution is probably a bit better, but overall I think Cech keeps more goals out than Reina.

Swipe Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Cech is a fantastic keeper (although slightly less so after his injury. Still looks a bit nervy at times) but I wouldn't swap purely as there's no need. Reina is brilliant too. As Carra said, along with Buffon, they're the best keepers in the world.

Swipe Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Cassilas is up there as well He's a great shot stopper but i think the other three always look more solid than him. Very good though. Especially considering how ridiculous the Real defence is at times
Guest Prongsy Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 As I said on another board a year or two ago, there's four keepers in the world that are the benchmark. Buffon, Cech, Reina and Casillas. Pepe is clearly the most underated but now that he's won 3 out of 3 Golden Glove awards, I think people are starting to open their eyes. Pepe is a far better shot stopper than people give him credit for and if he was in another team that let more long shots get hit, he'd be praised higher for that. He also snuffs out danger much quicker than the rest of those players by his positioning and speed off the line. Every keeper makes mistakes, every keeper has weaknesses and it doesn't really matter which one of them you have because they'll all do a fine job. The only weakness Pepe has is the occasional cross gets misjudged.
Armin_Tamzarian Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Cech before his injury. Pepe now. Agree with that.
Earl Hafler Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 He's a great shot stopper but i think the other three always look more solid than him. Very good though. Especially considering how ridiculous the Real defence is at times When comparing positioning, coming for crosses etc with the other keepers, that's what you have to take into account - the Real defence over the last few seasons. Casillas isn't just a good shot stopper, he's a bloody good keeper. But Reina made 4 mistakes last season whilst Riise was playing left back ( but not responsible for any errors ) so Cech wins it hands down.
magneto Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Reina still has a tendency to be beaten at his near post. Corners are also starting to get a bit nightmarish.

He's been making mistakes right, left and center.
