Paddy Berger, out on his a***.

Manager Martin O'Neill has ended Patrik Berger's Aston Villa career following the Czech's comments advising team-mate Gareth Barry to move to Liverpool.

The midfielder told the captain not to miss out on the chance to join the Anfield club.

And O'Neill said: "I was really disappointed and surprised that Patrik, with all his experience, would make such an inappropriate comment.

"He won't be playing any part in proceedings from here on in."

O'Neill added: "The sad aspect of it is that we are paying Patrik's wages for him to recommend one of our players to another football club, it's ludicrous.

"I think Pat realises that now and he's apologised, he said he didn't mean a great deal of harm but the harm's been done."

Berger was expected to leave Villa anyway this summer having made only eight Premier League starts in three seasons.

He probably wasn't going to get a new contract anyway by all accounts.

he really likes to air his dirty laundry in public....

no one in his right mind would advise a player to not go to a club challenging every year in the champions league and with a history as steeped as ours.

That sums O'Neill up - and to think people wanted this oaf at our club.

Can I just ask what your reaction would be if Benitez sacked JAR 12 month ago because he had said to Torres..."Look mate, If I was you I would sign for Manchester United cause they are Champions and there is more chance of winning silverware" ?

Aston Villa to Liverpool and Liverpool to Man United are the same thing alright.

Berkhamsted. I drink in The George, I have a cast on my left arm and one on my right leg and big scabs on my knees and shins. I will be in the George on Sunday wearing Uniteds away top.

You wanna fight?

;)

I wouldn't be happy.

Players can always be taken out of context and wilfully misquoted by the media. Happens all the time. Being sacked for stating your opinion (Even if that on reflection wasn't a great idea) is pretty low.

t***!

I thought Fergie reacted the right way.

The point of this thread is to say MON is a w***** for reacting the way he did. I dont agree. He is trying to build a side up and the last thing he needs is an old Liverpool hasbeen telling his Captain and best player to f*** off to Liverpool. Benitez has a nasty streak and he would react exactly the same way.

M4TTA... I hope to lose the cast off my leg today. Other than that going stir crazy. We have had to hide all sharp impliments in the house to stop us killing each other. ;)

That wasn't what Berger said anyway, and Riise never played for united while Berger spent 7 years at Anfield, He was telling him of his experience at Anfield

If that was Young or Carew telling Barry to go to liverpool do you think MON would have reacted the same way? He is only being bitter/ small time because Berger was at the end of his time with Villa anyway.

He was out in the summer. He has only played a few times in 3 years. He is still being payed till the end of his contract, just wont get another game. Sacked is not the right word is it?

It's all b******s really. Berger wasn't going to play for Villa again anyway but this gives MON a chance to go public and make himself look the big, tough guy.

guess I'm in a minority but I think O'Neill is spot on.

I'd be livid if one of our players advised another one to join another club.

forget all about the nonesense about Berger being sacked, he was not getting his contract renewed anyway

Yeah, nothing has actually happened here. A contract that Berger wasn't getting anyway has been publically withdrawn. O'Neil is just getting another, "it's not my fault Barry is leaving, it's a conspiracy" comment on record for the fans and showing that he is the boss at the same time.

A non-story really.
