Guest Raisbeck Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Answer some critics tonight I though - one of them being me. When we were all over the show in the 1st half he really put a foot on it and steadied the ship. Played a key role in the goal as well. Easily his best performance in a long, long time.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 immense game from him. was everywhere.
Ben 23 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Fantastic tonight but got tired towards the end. Proved why he should be in ahead of Lucas without question. Motm for me. Rest at the weekend for sure.
WillG Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Alonso, like many players who have spent most of the season recovering fron a serious injury, came good tonight and shoved his detractor's words up their arses. We'd have been right in the shyte if it had not been for his class and composure in the first 30 minutes - world class!
Swipe Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Was brilliant tonight. Loved his reaction when Kuyt was about to strike the ball for the first goal.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 he played very well tonight. As did Mash & derek. Pity the ref was inept
Old red eyes Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Alonso was my man of the match. Few passes went astray, but a lot didn't.
Guz Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Need more of the same and much more next week when he has Essien to contend with as well (unless Grant decides to play Essien at RB?)
growler Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 not sure about that, he played excellent, but I think Kuyt was man of the match. He was at right back, right midfield, right striker, central striker, left midfield, and I saw him at left back too.
fyds Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Wayne reckons Alonso is in 'terminal decline'. Might be a tad premature, there I reckon. Great game from him, Kuyt and Masch in particular.
Romario Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Wayne reckons Alonso is in 'terminal decline'. Might be a tad premature, there I reckon. Great game from him, Kuyt and Masch in particular.Alonso covered more ground than any other player on the park tonight. Surprisingly Makalale was second according to Sky.Terminal decline is a bit harsh. Coming back from injury, or simply fancing a change would be more like it.
surfaris Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 (edited) alonso was good. man of the match for me is kuyt. his ball control almost perfect tonight. work tirelessly.back to alonso: for me, there seem we play with 2 holding midfielder last night. our build from back really slow. sometime alonso will collect the ball and spray 40 yard long ball to many to either flanks.we lack movement, fluidity, in the middle. we dont have a CM who can carry the ball offensively -(fabregas/iniesta/xavi/sneidjer) -gerrard played as a second striker not link man/hole player ala zidane.marscherano are covering back four.alonso should play further up field to support our strikers. there was massive gap between gerrard & our CM.but alonso doesnt have pace. mobility. he cant play there. i d rather pick lucas in the next game because he offer us more dynamic, pace, mobitily movement going forward. that s is they key going forward. support the attack more rather than think too much about covering our back four because we have marsch there. our performance first half were really poor apart from kuyt heroic goal. Lanus Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 If Kuyt had managed to control and score that long ball from alonso then everyone would be talking about Alonso , not just a few.
Kuyt-fever Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Not a lot different from his usual performances to be honest. Fantastic again.
Stevie H Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 thought he was the best midfielder on the park. bossed it.
billybunter Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Where's that t*** from the match thread? My thoughts exactly Thought Alonso was great today. Held the ball well and some nice passes too
Leo No.8 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 He was majestic in the first half, the Alonso of his first season here. Passing was very positive and accurate, he picked the ball up and drove us forward, dictating the play from deep. Fantastic to see.
Knox_Harrington Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 What puts his performance into perspective is it's remarkably rare anyone dominates midfield in games between two top sides. He did.
Mike Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 depends where you sit in the ground i swear. in the second half he looked a yard off the pace to me.
