psl Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Can't understand why we're looking so fragile from corners and free kicks nowadays. I'm sure Arsenal will be targeting it again on Tuesday and that's very dangerous with Adebayor in their side. What's caused the decline in this area of our game? Missing Agger? Carra, Hyypia and Finnan getting older? Skrtel getting used to the system? Reina not showing his usual confidence? Or all of the above?
Swipe Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Was defo Pepe's fault today. Can't let the ball drop into that area of the penalty box. Should have barged through the crowd and took/punched the ball. Was poor.
Mike Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 its a very real problem for us and is clearly not being addressed.

alias75 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Most of the goals have been down to individual mistakes not the system, that can happen whatever way you choose to defend set pieces. Sometimes the delivery is very good and there isnt much you can do about it, sometimes individuals make the wrong decisions and it costs you.
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I don't have mush truck with the theory that rotation is the source of all our problems, but I think it's one of they key reasons why our set-piece defending has deteriorated

Mike Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 it was too crowded, if he had come and missed it it would have been also labeled his faultno way it was only a yard in front of him
Rimbeux Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 It something that teams have figured, but then again hardly rocket science, you put the ball I that uncertain area in front of the keeper and make it hard for him to get to the ball and there will be joy. After getting beat to two balls v Man U, Reina is now being caught in two minds when he should just keep coming for them, as there's slim to no chance of saving an 8 yard header. That added to other failing like us not winning second balls and not getting to the ball first is making it look shaky indeed.
Atticus Finch Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 (edited) it was too crowded, if he had come and missed it it would have been also labeled his fault Agreed. he came twice against united and missed and was blamed for the goals - "he should have stayed on his line". How about Crouch for not following the run? How about Rafa for not having someone on the post in those situations? Added - What about Pennant for giving the freekick away? Edited April 5, 2008 by ajr
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 it doesn't matter whose fault it is - that's 3 goals - Mancs & a*** x2 where there have been unchallenged headers to score
shanks59 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 (edited) Unfortunately, Carra, Skrtel and Agger all lack Sami's aerial prowess Edited April 5, 2008 by shanks59
CaptainXabi Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Sami's been around for quite a few goals though. I'm not sure the concession rate changes when he's missing.
lawrie Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Its starting to become a real problem, and if I feel nervous about set pieces, you can bet your life the players do as well.
jon_hall Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Unfortunately, Carra, Skrtel and Agger all lack Sami's aerial prowess Aye it's all Aggers fault.

Maldini Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 We've only conceded 5 from set-pieces in each of the previous two seasons, we've already conceded 13 this season. I think the lack of a consistent line up at the back is probably the reason, Finnan has missed a huge chunk of the season with injury, and the other full backs have been in and out too.
FirstDescent Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 in my opinion the problem isnt rotation or anything like that, their zone is still the same, Carra should know where Sami's zone is etc. for each game. for both adebayor and bentners goals they started either on the line or from far behind our players respective zones. so all our players do is watch the ball and the oponents can make their runs infront of the defenders, thus going up unmarked. anyways, its just ludacris not manmarking players with the aerial ability of adebayor and bentner.

How come we were BY FAR the best team on defensive set pieces for the last two years if it's the system that's at fault?

mathewbet1 Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Reina has had a touch of the flappers recently. Does not look comfortable coming for crosses. He's got to sort it out soon. Saying that hes's been great most of the season. Hopfully we'll improve on these set piece issues.

Plus the better teams have sussed it. Decent delivery and zonal marking is pointless. I think we need to alter it slightly and have a combination of zonal and man.
