CROUCH BYE BUY TO KOPBy Jeff Pickett

Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is set to become the first bigname English player to buy himself out of his club contract.

The England international has told friends he wants to hook up with former international boss Sven Goran Eriksson at Manchester City in the summer.

Crouch, Liverpool's top scorer last season with 18 goals, has ignored manager Rafa Benitez's at tempts to open contract negotiations.

He said he will make a decision over the summer, but privately has admitted it may be time to move on.

He is looking at European legislation that allows players to buy themselves out of five-year contracts when there is only two years left.

Crouch has found himself a bit part player this season as record signing Fernando Torres has smashed 24 goals since arriving on Merseyside.

canny blame him to be honest, he's obviously not going to regularly feature for us and the fella needs games to get his match fitness up to a decent level

Pretty sure he can't do that. I'll look into it after the game if nobody else has quashed it.

I can blame him, it's a s***house thing to do.

But are you surprised?

Crouch is the prime example of a mediocre striker buying into his own hype and actually think he is better than average.

Goodluck to him. Can't say I'll miss him at all. I recall Harry Radnapp laughing at us when we bought Crouch from him. Though after Rafa developed his game Harry wanted to buy him back for Portsmouth.

You can only move abroad if you buy your contract out.

really? do you want to tell us where it states that in the fifa or fa regualrtions. i'll give you a hint son - it doesn't say anything like that ;)

Oh, and Torres has scored 27 goals this season.

And Crouch has a four year contract.

the torres argument is moot imo. the issue here is presumably crouch's concern that the clubs asking price will be far too high thus restricting his movement in the market, á la carson. this summer he'll be three years into his four year contract (signed 20 july 2005), which means he could potentially take advantage of the theoretical right for a player to buy out his contract if he's over 28 and been at a club for more than three years.

you can find fifa's and the fa's regulations well .. where i linked them there :) the set of fifa regulations you want to be interested in though are these ones, and specifically the section labelled "Article 17. Consequences of terminating a contract without just cause". Actually this chelsea blog does a pretty thorough job of explaining if if you're interested in exploring the actual facts. it's a few years old but the regulations it discusses and as well as the terms haven't changed.

6(8), 9 and 2 goals in the league in his Liverpool career so far suggest that is exactly what he is.

It was well documented at the time that players could only move abroad if they wanted to buy their contracts out.

Andy Webster, who was involved in the landmark case, moved from Scotland to England. However, there's nothing in article 17 that stipulates a move abroad.

Crouch would not buy his contract. He'd terminate it without just cause and pay the compensation, as described in article 17. There are also grounds for terminating your contract if you haven't appeard in 10% of your clubs games.

To terminate his contract, Crouch would need at least a four year deal as it was signed before his 28th birthday. His contract is at least 4 years. He needs to notify the authorities within 15 days of our last match of the season. If he were to join Man City, they'd have to agree to any sanctions imposed.

It sounds ' trendy ' for people to talk about players buying their contracts but there's loads of hassle and the club he's joining would have to agree, in which case there could be more serious sanctions imposed if it was found the player had been ' tapped up '.

According to John Aldridge on Radio City after today's game we had an offer of £12m on the table for Crouch last summer. Bearing in mind how little Rafa has played him perhaps we should have sold him then?

His performances this season have been average at best.

Agree, he hasn't done enough for a starting place, he's been pony a lot this year.

Torres really has shown what we can be with a star striker.

It's not a theoretical right ( although it's not a buy-out ) - someone has done it.

You don't have to be over 28. And if he is over 28, he doesn't have to have been there for 3 years.

Under 28's have a ' protected period ' of 3 years. Over 28's have two years.

You haven't read my post properly at all because i'm basically agreeing with you.

Changed your name, SPK ? Oh yes...from SPK.

its not an entirely accurate account though as webster and tynecastle essentially came to an agreement about it for a few quid in compensation and that webster wouldnt sign for another team in the same league that season. he balls up the 15 day rule and fifa got in a proper state over the whole thing, concerned that this might become a bit common.

the whole article 17 thing has never been proper through the process proper so theres the potential here for crouch to be the first - deliver a mimimum of 15 days notice and get out so that he can play for a team in the same league.

oh and to clarify a player can cancel his contract, if under 28, following three years with a club, if over 28, after two years
