Torres Out Of Merseyside Derby?

Liverpool are sweating on Fernando Torres' injury situation ahead of this weekend's pivotal Merseyside derby

The striker was the subject of several heavy challenges last night when playing for Spain against Italy, limping out of the game in the 49th minute after a collision with the Azzurri's Marco Materazzi.

Liverpool will now need to wait for a medical opinion on whether Torres will be fit enough to start Sunday's game against Everton, though if not it wouldn't be the first time an injury sustained on international duty has ruled him out of action for the Reds.

Spain won last night's game 1-0, with Torres' replacement David Villa netting the spectacular winning goal.

I was watching the game and he didnt start the 2nd half so that bit of the report is wrong for sure. He did take a knock but played on afterwards and looked fine.

Alvaro Arbeloa made his debut for Spain when he came on as a second half substitute during the 1-0 win over Italy and Fernando Torres also enjoyed a 49 minute run-out.

The Reds number nine came through the match unscathed before being one of six Spanish players to be substituted in the second half.

He got a good kick from materazzi but came straight back on after getting some attention and he was fine for at least another 10 mins before being substituted at halftime

FERNANDO TORRES has shaken off any fears that he could be a doubt for the Merseyside derby by coming through a friendly run-out for Spain.

Liverpool’s top scorer was taken off after 49 minutes of the Spanish national team’s 1-0 win over Italy but, despite some rough treatment from Marco Materazzi, he emerged unscathed and was today returning to Merseyside to join up with the Reds squad ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Everton.

Torres’ early substitution caused some fears that he might have sustained an injury but the ECHO understands Rafa Benitez had an agreement with Spain boss Luis Aragones that his star striker would be taken off shortly after the start of the second half.

Why would we agree to a sub shortly after the second half started? Why risk those 4 mins after he's cooled down for 15? Bizarre.

Materazzi was definitely out for revenge. Even the Italian commentators were stating it after they saw that nasty challenge he made on Torres round about the 30 min mark. I switched channels after that as I was fearing the worst.

He would have used those 4 minutes as a warm down though.

Look at this c***.

Torres was lucky to escape from this tackle without serious injury.

Not being funny, but it actually looks to me like he's got the ball in that photo - don;t see why else it would be behind Torres' ankle.

He's still a c*** though.

I recall Materazzi elbowing someone in the last 16 CL match against Villarreal a couple of years back.

He's a dreadfully dirty player. There was no-one more fitting to be sent off in that game than that c***.

He was out on a mission on Wednesday, revenge for Inters loss and his red card at Anfield, simple as that.

Oh, I don't doubt, he's a c***. Still can't too much wrong with that particular photo though.

I did watch the game, he went straight for Torres ankle and he did not get the ball as you suggested above.

Like I said, I don't doubt it. I didn't see the game but several reports mentioned him being on a mission. The photo by itself is pretty innocuous though.

Think Rafa agrees.

Torres came in for a fair bit of rough treatment during the friendly for Spain in midweek against Italy. Not the best preparation for this fixture?

Clearly not the best preparation but he wasn't playing against Italy, he was playing against Materazzi. He is okay and he will be ready for this game.

Haven't seen it really commented on by people, but that Carsley 'tackle' on Torres yesterday was awful, a potential leg breaker - every bit as bad as the Taylor-Eduardo one, worse in fact because Carsley can't claim that the ball was nipped quickly away from him as the itl was still there and he just goes over the top of it, the c***.

I think the reaction of some of their players suggested they were expecting a red.
