Aurelio's got at least one mistake in a dangerous area in him every game - good left foot but still not enough going forward

Arbeloa is a good utility player but not a first choice RB and again has got mistakes in him and not great going forward

Riise..............

We need a first teamer for either side imo as Finnan seems to be struggling with fitness now he's getting older

hink Aurellio had a great game today.

Gets caught in possession too much for me. Happened at least twice today that on the edge of the box.

Definitely. I thought he and Arbeloa were fine today, I do agree with the original post that we need a signing or two in that position, but we have positions that need addressing (two wingers and either another striker or a player like diego that can play in the hole) that need addressing as a priority.

Give Insua a go, buy Alves or a player like him for RB.

Weird, I thought Aurelio had a pretty scrappy game whilst Arbeloa played well...

The only thing that's worried me about the formation we're playing right is while we score a bit more goals, control games slightly better we do seem a little bit shakier at the back than when we had two wide midfielder helping out our fullbacks. Getting good attacking fullbacks a la Evra or Alves might not help us tighten up defensively as I don't rate those players defensive skills any higher than Arbeloa or Finnan for instance.

1st 20 minutes i thought he'd had a bung. better 2nd half but still...

arbeloa the opposite. nightmare and way too lightweight 2nd half.

the original poster is right, none of our full backs are good enough.

Both average for me.

Somewhere in Arbeloa's wandering spirit there is some use, but just as that leads to him popping up anywhere in attack, it continues when he's defending, he looks like an in all day long for the oppo. Aurellio hasn't the legs or the power to be an attacking force in the PL, and going forward is clearly his strongest point, he is to Riise what Crouch or Morientes wwre to Cisse, all of whom are put into perspective by Torres.

Both were poor today. Aurelio is good enough to be first choice when fit but Arbeloa is no more than a back up.

Didnt see the game today - for me though, Arbeloa is the better full back.........

He's been decent enough but I thought he had his worst game in a red shirt today

Sell both left backs, bring two top quality fullbacks going forward for either side.

And Finnan. He's not getting any younger and Arbeloa is a decent back up for RB and versatile. Insua as back up at LB.

Surely Gerrard's recent performances and linking up with Torres shows that we don't need a player to play in the hole... ala Diego.

Our priorities should be a right winger, left back and then after that a left winger, should any money be left a left winger or striker.

But for me a top left back and right winger then we'll have a hell of a team and squad.

Depends of you believe Gerrard can play 90 minutes of all of our 60/70 games a season and if you believe we'll use the same formation and players every single game...

I don't believe that.

I don't believe that.

A player of Diego's quality isn't going to be happy playing second fiddle to Gerrard. Gerrard will play the vast majority of those games - injuries permitting.

You don't sell a player who has shown calm professionalism, technical ability and is very experienced and has never had pace for the sake of it. Finnan shouldn't be first choice next season if we perservere wth this shape but selling him is just soft. You wouldn't get wedge for him.

Back to the problem of signing someone happy to be second choice to Gerrard who is good enough.

I'd get two in who can play either side of Torres and are definitely good enough. Then, with Babel, it's two from three every week with Benayoun and Kuyt as back up to them.

Finding a full back who puts a tick in each box is very difficult. Generally you could have a solid defender who doesnt go forward particularly well (Arbeloa or Finnan) or someone who doesnt defend particularly well but goes forward particularly well (Carlos/Alves). There are very few Cafu's in the game and I think Rafa will have a decision to make in the summer. I agree it is defnitely one of the problem areas in our team at the moment.

Not sure about that, i agree its difficult to find a full back thats great going forward but also solid defensively but we could keep Arbeloa and Finnan who have both proven to be solid defensively in those games where we dont want our fullbacks bombing on. If you watch Man Utd they only have 1 attacking fullback in Evra i dont think you need 2 attacking fullbacks but having someone like Alves on the right would obviously add an extra dimension to our play especially at home.

Personally id be happy signing 1 top attacking fullback like Alves, and use Finnan, Arbeloa, maybe even Aurelio for certain games, Arbeloa has been good at left back.

It should be noted that Finnan does get assists, as does Arbeloa and Aurelio. Just as many as Cliche, Evra, Brown etc, I'd guess.

Alves and Chivu for me!

Isn't he more of a CB though?

I'd love Alves, but I think that ship has sailed. Last summer Chelsea offered in excess of 20m, and still couldn't pursuade Del Nido to sell. Cannot see G&H coughing up the funds to enable Rafa to bid for him, as well for players for other positions.
