Andy @ Allerton Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 (edited) I've never quite worked out why the bookies continue to make Manchester United favourites for this competition when they continually c**k it up in Europe. They are a very, very good league side - but once they get the more impartial refereeing of Europe they seem to suffer. Whatever they do - just doesn't seem to do the job past this kind of stage - for a team that routinely spends £30M+ on players and has backup/squad players worth £18M this really isn't good enough. Then when you take into account Fergusons 17 year stay at the club - it's pretty bad reading for them. 17 years - all that money - and 1 cup to show for it? Pretty unbelievable stuff - if they don't win it this year in Moscow - regardless of whether they win the league or not - you've got to say it's another season of abject failure for them. We'd love to win the League - because of the time we haven't done so - but for them - the holy grail if you like has to be the European Cup. Whether they will manage it (Despite once again being favourites) is anyone's guess - they have to get past Roma - which will be a formality - an easy couple of wins - but Barcelona may provide a bigger obsticle. And when they get past that - it seems likely they will face Liverpool or Chelsea in the final - I can't really see Arsenal progressing - but if that's the case - that's still Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool - three sides in Europe that could do damage to the favourites. Should be interesting - but could be another total failure for Alex Ferguson. Time will tell. Edited March 14, 2008 by Andy @ Allerton

Given your good runs in Europe yet total misery in the PL, If you win the CL this year but fail to win the PL, does that mean its another season of abject failure for Liverpool given that the PL was the Holy Grail for 2006-2007?

Guest gorsty2k7 Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Yes, its disappointing we are out of the running for the Premier League this year, but I'd say the possibility of once again being the top club in Europe would be ok. What we have to look forward to next year is Torres having totally settled in. He is 2 goals behind Ronaldo already, and that is with his injuries and being "rested" earlier in the season. All we need is someone to play up with him.

Quote So, too, do the favourites Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that only two European Cup triumphs in 30 years is not nearly enough for a club the size of United, but overcoming one of their rivals in the Barclays Premier League in the quarter-finals will be an almighty task. Same amount of finals your fvckin deluded club has been involved in, as the man in charge here has managed in 3 years. who knows he might even surpass the so called "biggestclubintheworld™ " in only 4 years. Nice to see the PR at your club turning 50 into 30. Doesn't seem to bad know does it Camel Lips Ferdinand has also had a little dig also. Quote "I don't think it's the be all and end all and some teams that have won the Champions League aren't considered great teams." Edited March 15, 2008 by floyd

It's also nice to know that Jon Arne Riise has been to as many European Cup Finals as Manchester United.

Andy, glad you feel you can speak for what our holy grail should be, but as an utd fan for me the holy grail is the league first and foremost, europe second...others may feel differently...but id rather go the next three years winning the league and not winning europe....maybe then id say right now europe is the holy grail.
Andy @ Allerton Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 OM admit it - you're f***ing s**** in Europe and the whole world laughs at you. From the money and the drawing power of bringing new players in - even if you win the European Cup this season - that does't explain away the pretty much 17 years of abject, laughable failure in Europe. Your team is mentally s****.

Your team is mentally s****. If you look at the 5 best teams in the league since you last won it, none of them have done too well. We won it once, a*** got to a final, Chelsea have not got past your lot and Leeds and Blackburn did s***. Yes its true that none of us are as good as you in Europe, but in that same time the mighty Barcalona have also only won it once. But yes, we are s*** in Europe. In all those years you have finished in the league above us once. I suspect that hurts eh? I bet there are a lot of Liverpool fans on here that have never seen Liverpool win the league other than on video. Ouch! So yes you are s*** in the PL Its the PL for me every time, I would love to win the CL again, but PL comes first. Edited March 16, 2008 by NWR

Ostrich Man Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Phew.....thank god we won that last night or it would have been a season of abject failure.

It's about time you won it. All that time in charge for your Manager and you've only ever won 2 European Cups? Pretty poor showing given the near unlimited cash he's had.
