This guy seems to get better and better the more i see of him. Great engine, great tackler, much better passer than Sissoko.

Gives Stevie the freedom he craves as well. Great buy and i've no doubt pundits like Charlie Nicholas will be eating their hats very soon. If he could add a few goals to his game, he could be really outstanding.

Its his mentality as well. Born winner.

Now if only we could have got his mate Zanetti all those years ago......

Nope. I doubt it

He won't do that, he hasn't got any talent in shooting from distance. It will never be the deciding factor for him, its his intelligent use of the ball when he's won it that will continue to affirm his reputation. He's the best in that role since Makelele was in his pomp and I get slightly annoyed when people on the kop insist on shouting for him to shoot. It'll be a waste of a shot, thats not his game.

why's that important though? His job isn't to score goals.

He's outstanding anyway.

Never seen one play so dominant when it comes to tackling.

The great - albeit passed it - Vieira looked so frustrated trying to fight him off last night.

Magnificent last night - covered every blade of grass, got in some crucial blocks and tackles and distributed the ball immaculately all night both long and short.

To think some people had him down as just a ball winner and a tackler when he lost some confidence with his passing earlier in the season.

'Not worth paying £18m for a player who can't pass', 'I like him but the £18m could be used better on other areas of the team if we kept Sissoko instead' etc were the kind of comments which were fairly commonplace earlier in the season.

Anyone who had actually seen him play for Argentina or even noticed him playing for us for 6 months last season could see he's a superb passer of the ball who just had a poor spell of a few games with that aspect of his game.

He's the best in the world in his position - any player you can say that about is worth paying what we paid for him.

Totally agree. Looked immense every time i saw him for the national side before he came to England. Was fantastic in World Cup. pLayed like a player in his 30s

He was brilliant and Argentina were the best side in the tournament until they came up against the famous German penalty mastery. As you say he is incredibly mature for his age in the way he plays the game.

Having the football brain to read the game so well, such a high level of mobility and immaculate timing with his challenges are what sets him apart from the rest.

He's basically the ultimate defensive midfielder, you couldn't possibly create a better one (if as I do you consider part of that role to be positional discipline and therefore don't count scoring as a consideration).

Agree Leo. Best in the world in his position.

During last nights game an Inter player breezed past a couple of ours far too easily at one point.

I screamed at the TV "look how easy he's getting away from them!"

Suddently Maschareno gallops into view.

My Spurs-supporting dad goes "he won't get away from him though".

On cue, Masch slides in, takes the ball, and instantly - and this is why i think he's the best - he prowls forward ready to launch an attack!

He's amazingly confident on the ball. He won't simply roll it to Gerrard or Bable whenever he gets possession. He moves forward and picks a pass.

This season he's been as good as Xabi has been in starting attacks.

Wonderful player. £17m for a defensive player shows you how highly rated he is.

Would have been half a dozen other european giants who would have paid that without blinking an eye.

Glad we were one of them!

Think hes been our most consistent player this season which when you consider the season Torres and to a lesser extent Gerrards having that says something. Can hardly remember him having a poor game for us.

One of those players that reads the game better than most and when hes in the side as a fan you know everything will be ok. People have talked about Rafa wanting to play the current formation but not having the personnel to do it before, most talk about Babel being the key but i think having a player like Mascherano in there is just as crucial in this formation. He breaks up so many of the attacks and just completely takes the fight out of the opposition.

Remember watching him aged around 20 playing in the Olympics and thinking what a great player he was then, everything went through him and he played like a veteran, hes probably my favourite Liverpool player now. What makes him even more special is that he plays in a position where there aren't too many that can do what he does, its very much a specialist position and we have the best in the world for that position.

I was always a massive fan of Didi Hamann, but I think Mascherano could be better.

Frightening.

One day, he might even be as good as carsley.

Never be a patch on Hayden Mullins though.

We should have gone for the dream team of Mullins and Curbishley

i can only imagine that it must be a nightmare playing against him

He is a big reason why Stoke are on the verge of promotion

Not scoring goals has always been something Alonso has been critisised for. If he's got the tools for it, and I think he does, it would be good to see him take a few shots now and then. It's not like holding midfielders never have the opportunities for it.

I think Alonso might get more chances to do that now that he has Masch next to him
