Jim D Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Villa have just beaten Reading 2-1 which means we now have a three way tie for 4th place, Us, Everton and Villa. If City beat Everton tomorrow it'll make it a four way tie. 4 Liverpool 26 +24 475 Everton 26 +18 476 Aston Villa 27 +15 477 Portsmouth 27 +11 448 Manchester City 26 +5 44 We have an advantage with a much better goal difference than the rest but what worries me about this run in is the distraction of the Champions League on our League form and if Everton keep going in the UEFA Cup they also may be affected. We will be favourites for 4th place for obvious reasons but City and Villa don't have any European games to deal with midweek. Villa are looking dangerous and perhaps it is them who we got to worry about more? Also we still got to squeeze in our game in hand against West Ham at Anfield, by all means that isn't a guaranteed three points because our form at Anfield this season has been mediocre.
surf Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 We also have a dificult run in, still a few tricky away games to come.
MFletcher Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 We still have to play City and Everton at home. I think we'll get there without many problems.
liveabiglife Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Was thinking the same thing. Reckon a draw is best result on Monday night - then if we beat W Ham we go 2 clear with Man City and Everton still to play. Would rather see City fall away, and so I'm going to be praying for a stalemate in that game.
Chili Palmer Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 I don't think it will be tight, I looked at the next 6 fixtures for all the contenders for 4th in the paper today and we have 4 homes and 2 aways and I think the others all have 2 homes and 4 aways, I think we could put some daylight between us and them quite shortly.

A win either way makes it a little harder.
Jim D Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Liverpool MarchBolton Wanderers (A)Newcastle United (H)Reading (H) West Ham (H)Manchester United (A)Everton (H) AprilArsenal (A) Blackburn Rovers (H)Fulham (A)Birmingham City (A) MayManchester City (H)Tottenham Hotspur (A) Looks like the fixtures in March are going to make or break us in the League. At least four of those fixtures are winnable but what a sequence of games we got towards the end of the month, Mancs (A), Everton (H), Arsenal (A) Ouch!

With, presuming we get through the second leg unscathed, the first leg of the quarters stuck somewhere in between.

Guest Kaizer Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 (edited) We have 47 points and we have 36 more points to fight for, this means we can get maximum 83 points. I`m pretty certain we will finish with more than 70 points, something that means we will finish ahead of the 5th placed team with some distance. There is no need to worry about this at all from my point of view. Everton, Villa, Pompey and City have all lost 6-7 games each and they will continue to lose games for the rest of the season as well, if any of them finishes with more than 65 points I will be hugely surprised. I love the optimism, but didnt you say we should be ahead of Arsenal by (or after) Christmas? I think we will finish 4th, just barely though.

beejay Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Everton 2-0 up HT v Man City. Have a feeling the derby game this year will be absolutely crucial. Hate to say it but the bluesh*te look very solid, no pushovers at all and we will have to be at our best to clinch 4th with Villa grinding out results too.

Or, let them come fourth, but we'll win the CL and then 4th is irrelevant - cos it wont count for CL. Perfection!

Barnesy_10 Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Everton play like they are full of confidence in both home and away games.. Defensively they are more solid than us... which is depressing to admit when they have Hibbert in the back four. As a team they play better attacking football than us as well. They seem to attack in a group rather than us who lump it to Torres or Kuyt. Cahill always seems to be in the box, along with Osman whenever a cross comes in, regardless of the pace of the attack. Its going to be really difficult to get 4th this season... we have too many tough games left to play... the longer Everton stay in the Uefa cup then the better it is for us, but regardless of that I think Everton will match us all the way for points.

liveabiglife Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 (edited) Its a high risk strategy. You think? I'm still holding out for third, especially now Chelsea can't win. Edited February 25, 2008 by BennyBobo

Check back when Agger, Carra and Skrtel are all available.
growler Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Lets not forget that they are still in the UEFA cup too, which is quite draining for a squad their size. I can't see them getting to the semi's and still being in the top 4. We didn't play great on the weekend and won, and that is what we need for the next few months.
