Jamie Redknapp: Rafael Benitez falls behind

Former captain Jamie Redknapp has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool's league progress under Rafael Benitez this season by saying that the Spaniard is currently further away than ever from bringing the title back to Anfield.

Benitez is in his fourth season at Liverpool and, after finishes of fifth, third and third, the club are again out of the title race for this season and only involved in a battle for the fourth Champions League place with the likes of Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Jamie Redknapp: Rafael Benitez falls behind

Champions League, you're having a laugh: Jamie Redknapp (right), winner of the League Cup in 1995, has criticised Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, who has taken the club to two European Cup finals in three years

"I don't think Liverpool can win it under Rafa Benitez," said Redknapp. "I think they are further away than they have ever been before. They have got no chance. Liverpool under Rafa Benitez can beat anyone on their day. But over the course of a league season they struggle."

The supporters of Liverpool have always prided themselves on their league record, but they have not won the title since 1990 and Manchester United are now only two behind their record-breaking tally of 18 championships.

But, according to Redknapp, it is European competition which matters most to Benitez, who has taken Liverpool to two Champions League finals in three years, including victory in 2005.

"For Rafa Benitez, the kudos is winning the Champions League. That's his priority and everything is geared to that," said Redknapp.

"You don't get to two Champions League finals without being a great tactician. But I look at Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea and they have all got match winners in their line-up.

"Liverpool have got two in Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Sometimes Peter Crouch can do it when he plays."

Liverpool have picked up only seven points in six league matches in 2008 and have also been unimpressive in labouring to victories over Luton and Havant & Waterlooville to reach the FA Cup fifth round.

Redknapp, who was speaking as a Sky Sports pundit, largely attributes the club's league difficulties to the rotation policy under Benitez.

"They make so many changes and you don't get consistency or understanding," he said.

"The best managers like Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson keep basically the same team and system. In their big games, they field their strongest team. But look at Liverpool. Who's going to play up front? I'm not sure about Dirk Kuyt, but who plays up front with Fernando Torres?

"When Peter Crouch and Torres play together they look as if they can make it work but they never really seem to be given a chance. They get one or two games together and then Benitez changes it."

With the FA Cup and the Champions League representing the only trophies realistically available to Liverpool, the next week will prove critical to their season. On Saturday, they face Barnsley in the FA Cup before the first leg of their Champions League first round match against Inter Milan next Tuesday.

I always change over when any sky pundit starts talking. Redknapp included. But i dont disagree with much of that. I dont really believe we'll ever win it under Rafa. Whatever the circumstances

Although the 'further away than ever before' statement is patently b******s

We've lost 1 premiership game less than Utd. What we lack is those 2 class players (Torres partner and a decent winger to really open teams up) because the yanks lied and didn't give Rafa enough money pre season imho.

redknapp's become a really unlikeable so and so.

Yes, another Houghton

anybody who thinks that Rafa can't win the title with a simmilar budget to chelsea is talking out of his a***

Sky Sports News, on their newspaper review this morning, showed a two-page spread from THAT paper, a Jamie Redknapp "Exclusive" entitled "Liverpool Will Never Win The League Under Rafa"

I mean, I alwasy knew he was a stupid c***, and it takes an extra stupid c*** to stand out as a stupid c*** in the world of football punditry, but writing for that lot?

i agree with lots of what that article says, Benitiez loyalists need to take their heads out of the sand, he needs to make some changes to his approach rather than bleating on about two more players, one more player. Our squad is far superior to the likes of everton, villa, portsmouth.

Did he write for them or is it more lies from them?

I saw him on Sunday, and was surprised, not by the opinions - anyone who spends any time on here will have heard everything before - but the way he expressed himself. He started off as if he was going to be reasoned and analytical, but almost allowed himself to get worked up into something 'quotable' by Keys; like he saw the opportunity to shake off a reputation for being bland - although it's always easiest to take the kind of line he did when there is no-one there to take issue or dispute what you say - and neither Terry nor Keys were ever going to do that.

I think his main article was with The Guardian to be fair

He's as much idea and insight about it as the next man on the street, but in amongst the usual everything we do being wrong from there not being enough matchwinners, to not picking the same non-matchwinners enough, but then when we do we are picking the wrong non-matchwinner because it should be Crouch who might be a matchwinner (nothing to back it up but he's my mate and he's good feet for a big man, he's English and I think he should play every game), the real silly one is the 'he only cares about the CL' as if there is some willful neglect and sabotage of the league because the CL matters more. Think he should try harder but he's not paid to.

Didn't look like the usual borrowed quotes, was a two page spread with "Jamie Redknapp Exclusive" and his pic, the lot.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but he's still a clueless goon on the telly.

Spot on. We rightly should be shot down for the way we have under-performed. The "all media against us" choir never stops singing in these parts :(

In reality he didn't do an interview with either. Those are exact quotes from Sky sports on Sunday.

I hate him as a pundit. useless. most pundits are.

That's what got me. Could he explain then why we were so poor in the early CL games, and played a weakened team at home vs Marseille, when we were doing pretty well in the League? Not that Keys would ever have asked that.

And tossing Terry the bone - "And which would you prefer, the Premiership or the CL?" just to rub the point in begged the question about which would Roman prefer?

Jamie may well believe every word he spoke, and he may well be right, but it was a you-toss-em-up-and-I'll-knock-em-out-of-the-ground kind of interview, happy to elicit the anticipated response.

it could just be that they are better than us?

nothing to do with rotation

if its not rotation it Zonal marking, if its not zonal marking its too many spanish imports....

does the 'they' include Everton?

I agree with nearly everything Redknapp says there (except the bit about the CL).

If Redknapp can say that we will never wil the league under rafa based on nothing but his opinion, I can say that we will finish above Everton this season
