Left back can't think of anyone, but someone that has pace and quality going forward

 

People may say we dont have the money for these players but personally id trim the squad by 3 or 4 players, lets have more quality less quantity and use the reserves to fill some squad places, for games like today id much rather we played 2 or 3 young hungry, enthusiastic players than 4 or 5 squad players that can't be bothered.

 

We do have 5 or 6 players we can sell for decent money and we're also getting some big wage earners off the books.

The money aside, I'm not sure a team could support both Alves and Lahm. That's a little too much craziness from fullback. Plus we'd be useless at defending back post headers.

 

Edit: Not saying I wouldn't give it a try if the opportunity to sign both of them arose though

Think you're spot on that we need 4 high quality signings in those positions but it will be difficult to cram all 4 into one window without diluting quality. I'd venture only two of those will be filled long term this summer with a lot depending on who becomes available. If Alves moves for a reasonable price we should be in for him, same goes for Berbatov.

Unless we have lots of money, which i doubt, i'd spend it all on a top class winger. Anything left i'd spend on a top class striker. Anything left i'd spend on another top class winger. Anything after that on another top class striker.

If there's any money left after buying 4 attacking players i'll start thinking about full-backs. Maybe.

I think we can generate a LOT of money through sales. Momo (basically done), Carson, Crouch, and Guthrie could probably generate 30M without really affecting Rafa's options at all. Those 4 players have what 40 appearances this season between them (all Crouch and Momo obviously)? I'd be surprised if all of Pennant, Riise, Kewell, Voronin, and Kuyt survived the summer as well. It won't look good for the net spend, but there'll be money available to get 3 or 4 quality players this summer.

Agree with those two, and also agree it will be tough to do all four. I'm seriously of the mind that if the choice is someone like Quaresma or Mancini for wing, or Alves for RB, then we go for Alves because he is top draw and the wingers are just pretty good, not outstanding. Yep I'd lose two forwards and just bring in Berbatov, and I'd lose both left footed left backs and just bring in Alves, having three into two.

 

There's no point compromising on attacking players if you cant spot diamonds or develop bargains into world class, the best or dont bother, you can get away with drilling defenders to be better.

Fair enough, we might have some money. Then again, Carson + Momo = Masch leaving us the Crouch money. I doubt we're going to spend 30m + the usual budget of 20-30 m = 50-60 million players next summer.

 

Anyway, my main point was that my order of preferences for signings is this:

Full back

 

I don't want to see us signing decent squad players either, i want players that go straight into the first team. Rather 2 good players than 4 decent ones.
