Guy Roux has blamed Rafa Benitez for the lack of progress made by Djibril Cisse in his career.

Roux was Auxerre coach when Cisse was snapped up by Liverpool, but he feels his former charge has not yet achieved what he should have in the game.

The legendary Frenchman has claimed that being played on the wing during his time with The Reds hampered Cisse's progress.

"Benitez slowed down his career by playing him as a right winger," blasted Roux in L'Equipe.

"He preferred to play the players he has signed in the centre.

"I watched Cisse last Wednesday for Marseille against Auxerre. He didn't miss a single pass. It is untrue to say he has technical weaknesses. He has made huge improvement on that level."

Roux has also heaped praise on Cisse's attitude and the way he has come back from two broken legs.

"His character? He has great reactions and an excellent state of mind.

"Cisse has been outstanding with his team-mates. How many players would have sulked? Moreover, do you know any boy who has two broken legs and plays football like him?"

A lack of natural ability and not much upstairs are his undoings. He's done very well to show strength of character to come back from two broken legs, but if you aint got the chops and aint got the head to think around it, there's only so far you can go.

I imagine there are numerous people with broken legs who play football exactly like Cisse does. At least they've got the excuse of having a plaster cast for their terrible first touch.

And on the pitch attitude. Cisse used to talk a great game but his words didn't translate to the way he played the game.

Eh? Would I be right in thinking he only played right wing a handful of times and was mostly deployed as our most advanced striker?

He's lost quite a bit of pace as you can imagine from the leg breaks, and whereas before he had the speed to recover from poor touch, his technical failings are becoming even more prominent.

IMO one of only a few things that Rafa has got wrong. Roux has a point I think.

I still think, handled correctly, he could have been excellent for us, so much early promise.

Just my opinion and I'm amazed at some of the stick he took. It was blindingly bloody obvious from some of the golas he scored he had fabulous ability. West Ham, Everton, Cup final to mention a few.

Water under the bridge now, hey ho.

Can you imagine defnders terror if they had the pace of Cisse and Torres coming at them!! Feck.

Would you say it would be carnage?

Two things, we dont play that french style of putting 10 behind the ball and playing in a quick striker with balls over the top, so we were never going to suit what he was developed to play. Also the idea of playing two such out and out quick centre forwards together is almost unheard of as it doesn't really work.

Cisse was one of the things that Rafa got very right. He's got other things wrong mind, but Cisse wasn't one of them. A limited lazy footballer with a bad attitude, shown the door as quickly as possible - very very right

The gulf between Torres and Cisse is frankly embarrassing

Oh I agree with that, would never argue otherwise. Torres is in the top few in the world no question.

And he's ours!!!!

1. He didn't play many games on the wing.

2. He has improved his technique you say? How good. Down to his time with Rafa at LFC then?

3. Maybe you should have taught him to stay onside if you wanted him to play in the centre...

4. Excellent character, well yeah, great willpower. Lazy sulking sulk on the pitch.

....quit talking b******s

What a load of s****, if Cisse had a football brain he could have been class, he doesnt, what he does have is pace. But thats not enough at a club like ours. Reading maybe.

Cisse would be terrific at a team like Newcastle. Somewhere that will base the entire game and strategy around him, and won't care to much that he doesn't understand the offside rule and doesn't finish enough of his chances. Int hat sort of setup he'll probably end up with 20+ league goals a season.

Our team was never going to be setup that way under Rafa though, and Cisse didn't have the neccessary skills to adapt.
