smithdown Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Is it my imagination or do City fans seem to get letters from their club every year about how to behave over Munich?
Stevie H Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 isn't it a rule that you have to have numbers on the back of shirts for the referee's benefit?
Falconhoof Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Its only right that they mark the anniversary in some way. I'm sure the commemorative DVD will be on sale in the club megastore. kerr-ching.

RP Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 (edited) Kenyon is still gutted that Chelsea have never been lucky enough to "have a Munich" to help them establish their brand globally. Edited January 10, 2008 by RP

I'm sure the commemorative DVD will be on sale in the club megastore. kerr-ching. not forgetting the limited "replica Kit" Forgive me if I'm wrong but these posts sound like they're turning their noses up at United for them taking advantage of an excellent marketing opportunity. If our commercial department had been even remotely as aware of quality opportunities in the past, that side of the business would be far more profitable than it is now. I mean, we won the CL and as good marketing opportunities go, they don't come much better. How did we fare with that? Abysmally. We could take an awful lot of leaves our of their book when it comes to that side of things.

We could take an awful lot of leaves our of their book when it comes to that side of things. Their commercial department was kick started by building a 26k stand in 1995, their capacity since then has kept way ahead of everyone else in the country. That translates into fans buying merchandise far more directly than any 'product led' initiatives that our club shop could come up with. Their huge profits come from the bigger capacity and the bigger trade in the club shops that it generates.

Some good points Graham but the fact remains that our marketing and commercial operation pre the appointment of Ian Ayre was a f*cking joke. I mean, it took them until Nov 2005 to bring a commemorative CL winners jersey and other related memorabilia and even then the lack of stock and planning cost them dearly. I appreciate that the Mancs have a lot more footfall on matchdays and that their operation, for now, is bound to be more successful than ours but it would be nice to see our lot trying to redress the balance. Out of interest, does anyone know what sort of initiatives Ayre has implemented (other than the TV channel) since his arrival?
Des Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Kenyon is still gutted that Chelsea have never been lucky enough to "have a Munich" to help them establish their brand globally. Matthew Harding doesn't quite cut it, huh?
theredfella Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Matthew Harding doesn't quite cut it, huh? I reckon they'd change the name of that stand if they could (maybe they already have?). Remember reading somewhere that he's been practically airbrushed out of the club's history, firstly by Bates and then by the new regime.

Gray - YPC Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 not forgetting the limited "replica Kit"I actually don't think that's fair, and for once I'll stick up for those horrible c****. I'm sure I've read that they have been absolutely adament that the replica kit and the like will not be available for public sale. If they were to auction the kit off for the victims families or ex=players association of something that would be a different matter and fair enough.
Guest PaulMcC Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Did Cantona once play a Munich memorial game and get a few hundered grand in costs? And the families got hardly any money between them

Jarg Armani Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 yes he better fuggen hadn't.this is how rumours start.

growler Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 the tv channel was started before Ian did, so not his to claim credit for. the fact that we can't get the channel in Australia however, is something he should be looking at.
fyds Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I mean, we won the CL and as good marketing opportunities go, they don't come much better. How did we fare with that? Abysmally.Actually, as a result of winning the CL, we made a record year on our marketing and upped our fanbase (according to UEFA) to £18m, while having the two best sport DVD sales in the country for that year 'Road to istanbul' and the 'CL Final' itself. All this despite having a dispute at the time with Reebok. Not as good as it could be, but as bad as you're making out. Incidentally - after our win in Marseille, I was buying Jos (the wife's uncle) a Liverpool shirt at the JJB at Cribb's Causeway in Bristol - they only had two left in his size (fat bast*rd) - when I said 'I thought the marketing would be better with adidas' the guy said 'Oh it is - we're selling them twice as fast as any other shirt...you know the black kits they wore in Marseille? Next three days we couldn't keep up - they just flew out the stores all over the country - look at our lot - the rack's still full!' He was a ManU fan and was complaining at the slowness their stuff was moving at. Grass is always greener, perhaps, but we're doing better than we think maybe.
floyd Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 (edited) Didn't the Mancs start selling a commemorative Munich bag last year, and sought of remove it, after some objections were raised about cashing in? Nice marketing team they have Edited January 11, 2008 by floyd
John am Rhein Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 This Munich rememberance industry gets bigger every year. They'll be floating it on the stock exchange next.
