Gray - YPC Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 I'd argue that the only flops on that list (though I've not considered the kids) are: JosemiMorientesPalettaLeto I guess others may say the following, but listed is why I don't:Gonzalez - Made money on himBellamy - Did a job and made money on himPellegrino - Free & kept Sami fresh for EuropeKuyt - 6 months ago I'd have in the the maybe list, so he deserves more time before I write him off as a flop.Nunez - Didn't lose money on him. Did a job at a time when the squad as weaker.Kromkamp - Didn't lose money on him and it meant we got rid of Josemi - actually, he's a HIT for that!!Aurelio - On a free so no real loss. Still a better option than Riise when fitPennant - Paid over the odds, but done a decent job, whilst not being good enough for a title winning XI I guess the problem is that not many have been 'brilliant' signings.
Guest prophet Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Think we have bot too many mid quality players eg Momo, Pennant, Aurelio, Gonzalez, etc whereas we could have spend on one world class midfielder esp(i know, easier said than done). Just wondering now that we should NOT buy anymore and wait till summer to splash out on just two or three players(World class) in these positions: CB, Rite back and Left Wing. Anyone like to fill in the names?

Bit harsh on Leto - the lad has only been here 6 months (?) - could still have be a decent 2nd choice left mid in a couple of seasons? Josemi seemed to lose form - started well, then just went downhill - £2m wouldn't call him a flop, more of a risk and like you say it all ended up with us getting the classy Arbeloa in the end with not much money wasted prophet - Gonzalez is gone mate - and Aurelio may be injured a fair bit but he is above 'mid-average'. Momo seems to be gone (£££'s please - and good luck to the lad), and Pennant gives us something which few other players in our squad can give - genuine width and ability to stretch the opposition defence (remember the narrow-midfield end days of GH's reign?) - if we can get better wide layers in then great - until then keep Pennant as he gives us another possibility that we'd otherwise be lacking...

Anyone like to fill in the names? I think the purchase of Torres was the first step in the drastic improvement of our first 11. Having said that, do we have the money now? Are the owners broke or is it all a smoke screen...? who knows, but another top class striker is needed. Going back to Rafa's signings though, i tihnk he's done pretty well.. I think the likes of Alonso, Torres, Babel and more are players that we just wouldnt have been able to attract to the club before Rafa took charge.. they'd have gone to man utd or the likes if Houllier was still in charge.
Tim Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Gonzales cost us £4m while Aurelio cost us £2m as he'd already signed a pre-contract with another team. We also only got £2.7m for Garcia.

After all, because of those players not performing as expected Liverpool is where it's now.
jimmylibel Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Gonzales cost us £4m while Aurelio cost us £2m as he'd already signed a pre-contract with another team. We also only got £2.7m for Garcia. According to the Echo and other reports Gonzalez cost £1.5 million.
Ostrich Man Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Anyone know how much Rafas spent? BOught and sold?TIAnot enough?
Lanus Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Am I the only one who thinks Rafa's latest round of spending was a success? he gets so much stick but he can only buy the players he can afford. The one time he pays for a top player, he hits the jackpot... I dunno where this anti rafa talk is coming from to be honest.
oojason Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I dunno where this anti rafa talk is coming from to be honest. probably from the same idiots who booed vs wigan - and the same idiots that'll moan when the commentator announces that Rafa has rotated lots again when in fact Aurelio, Alby and Gerrard are injured... and the same idiots who don't realise that Rafa is the best man for the job.
kop205 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Maybe we can give Rafa some extra spending money from our share of the gate receipts that we are refusing to let Luton keep apparently. Now, I have no love for Luton, being old enough to remember away-fan bans, plastic pitches and no-shows for FA cup ties due to snow, nor do I know how much of their current predicament is self-inflicted - but are we really the same club who only a few years ago allowed Sunderland to defer on the full fee for Stephen Wright until if/when they got promoted?

We need it as much as they do!
Billy Dane Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Not impressed with Luton making it public tbh, so f*** them. We've put our hands in our pockets plenty of times in the past for the likes of Wrexham.
kop205 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 We've put our hands in our pockets plenty of times in the past for the likes of Wrexham. Which is kind of my point isn't it? Do we not do that anymore? Or there is a particular reason why we haven't in this instance (other than needing it ourselves!)? They are genuine questions. Like I said, I don't know the ins and outs of it all so I'm not making any sweeping judgements. It just seems that this is the kind of thing that we used to sneer at other clubs for doing. With everything else going on regarding the running of the club, it could be seen as another example of taking us away from the values we once stood for I suppose. I don't want to make a huge issue of it and if there is a genuine explanation then all well and good. I was just a bit sad when I heard the story is all.
hideNseek Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Aurelio is a class player and no where near average, just always injured:-(
surf Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Rafa's transfer dealings have been excellent. His 'poor' signings (which every manager has) haven't been costly, as we've recouped our money on them. My only complaint would be too many squad players in relation to the amount of top signings. He's spent excellent money.
Kop_90 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Anyone got a comparison of how much we have spent in Rafa's time at the club compared with Utd, a*** and Chelsea. Heard a rumour that Utd only paid approx 7-8 million for Anderson and Nani with the rest of the fee depending on appearances and wining trophies. Seem's a small fee compared to the add on's if true. Are most deals similar to this these days.
Big E Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 I'd also be interested to know about net spending from the likes of Villa, Everton, Spurs and Portsmouth, as its these teams we're competing with at the moment according to the press.
Tommok Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Even factoring in the money spent recently on Mascherano and the amount received for Sissoko - the net spend is pretty decent really esp when nearly a third of it went on Torres. It is entirely possible that one/some of the younger players he has bought could turn out to excellent buys in the way that Carson now looks a shrewd bit of business - if we sell him or keep him as back-up.
pipnasty Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Could somebody please spend the next 6 hours looking up and posting the net spends of all Premiership Clubs + La Liga clubs since 1995 so that I can prove that Rafa is crap, please? Ta
