Walrus Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 RAFA: LET'S FORGET THE GAP Jimmy Rice at Anfield 02 January 2008 Rafa Benitez will tell his team to put the 12-point gap between themselves and the top of the table to the back of their minds over the coming weeks in a bid to resurrect the club's stuttering title charge. The boss believes dwelling on the distance to leaders Arsenal would only put added pressure on their shoulders. Benitez knows it will now be difficult for the club to end it's 18-year wait for a title this season, but claims his talented squad are still capable of being in contention come May. Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Wigan at Anfield, Benitez said: "It's clear the gap is bigger but I've said it before, it is a long race. "You have to try to play one game at a time if you can, because if you think about the gap you will play with more pressure. We need to play well, create chances and score goals, then see every week what the situation is. "For sure it's more difficult now, especially when you know you are creating chances in all of the games but cannot score that second goal and kill the game. "I can say a lot of things but at the end of the day you need to win if you are to reduce the gap. It's not time for talking, it's time to play well, score goals and win games." Benitez believes his side would have been worthy winners against Steve Bruce's men after dominating possession and creating much the better chances. The Spaniard said: "If you analyse the game, they were playing long balls and trying to win the second ball, whereas we were moving the ball and you could see Pennant, Kewell, Torres and Gerrard involved in all the attacks. "I am really disappointed because it's another game where we needed a little bit of luck. We had plenty of possession and chances, and you need to take those chances. "The other team just defended, then got a free kick and won the second ball, and they've got a draw. Explaining his decision to play Fernando Torres up front in a 4-1-4-1, Benitez added: "We were trying to play with wingers really wide and Gerrard getting into the box. We wanted to spread the other team. If you play with more strikers but the other team is really deep, maybe it is more difficult. We wanted to create space." link I for one am still 100% behind the man.
McBain Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 We're only at the half-way stage yet! On course for a 24 point deficit.
Hieronymus Bosch Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) As am I (behind him 100%, that is). Not sure it'll do any good though. He has made his share of mistakes, and has a lot to learn, but there's no doubt in my mind that he should have the chance to do so. However, the way things are these days, I think he's on borrowed time. And it's f*cking depressing to think that. Edited January 2, 2008 by mrshah
RafaShanks Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 On course for a 24 point deficit. Isn't that progress?

Knox_Harrington Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 The gap massively undermined us tonight. It plays on our collective minds. Which is why it shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place. We won't win the league until we have momentum from the start of the season.

From the look of it, we wont win the league with Rafa in charge and lots of deadwoods in the team.
Guest RedLegend Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Think Rafa will be gone in the Summer barring another CL win anyway.
hideNseek Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 We're only at the half-way stage yet!Agree. But we do still have to go to Arsenal, Chelsea and the Mancs. Sadly can't see us gaining a single point there.
briant2001 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Agree. But we do still have to go to Arsenal, Chelsea and the Mancs. Sadly can't see us gaining a single point there. but if we get 9 points how things will look different... - as a friend said to me in May '05 at 3-0 down - Keep The Faith...
Redkop Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 as a friend said to me in May '05 at 3-0 down - Keep The Faith... It's hard to at the moment...
McBain Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 but if we get 9 points how things will look different... - as a friend said to me in May '05 at 3-0 down - Keep The Faith... If anyone had suggested to me putting Bon Jovi on at ht back then i'd have murdered them
briant2001 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 It's hard to at the moment... as it was in May 05 - I didn't dare believe then, I don't dare believe now...
Stevie H Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 The gap massively undermined us tonight. It plays on our collective minds. Which is why it shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place. We won't win the league until we have momentum from the start of the season.and we don't have the tactical approach to create sustainable momentum from the start of the season. yossarian had decided to live forever or die in the attempt.
Boca Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 but if we get 9 points how things will look different... - as a friend said to me in May '05 at 3-0 down - Keep The Faith... Just as a matter of interest, is your avator Mark Viduka scoring the winner in the 4-3 a couple of seasons back?
_00_deathscar Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 If anyone had suggested to me putting Bon Jovi on at ht back then i'd have murdered them Haha!
ricflairandy Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Its a big gap, and i still think man utd will win it, but come on. Win our game in hand and 7 points is the gap, that is not much atall,
Coyler Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 (edited) but if we get 9 points how things will look different... - as a friend said to me in May '05 at 3-0 down - Keep The Faith...Dead right. Rafa's seasons appear to be themed, and this is the Year of the Away. (As in 'fixtures', not 'adios'. ) Edited January 4, 2008 by Coyler

ricflairandy Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 It's 9 now. No its not, its 10 now, 7 if we win our game in hand. If your refering to the difference away from arsenal then your right, but at the end of the day united are the team to beat, arsenal will not win the league by a long way.
Coyler Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Can we not pick Chelsea instead of United as the team to beat?
Gilps Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Can we not pick Chelsea instead of United as the team to beat? Lets ignore them too. Then we're the team to beat
