This seems to be getting more and more common.

Horrible. His nephew was playing, had scored two goals but had to be subbed soon after cos he was obviously shaken up as the players new something badly wrong had happened.

Dreadful news.

THE world of football has been left stunned at the sudden and tragic death of Phil O’Donnell. The Motherwell captain collapsed during his side’s game at Fir Park against Dundee United and was rushed to hospital where, sadly, he passed away.

Phil O’Donnell, who was 35-years-old, began his career with Motherwell in 1990 and spent four years at the club, helping them to a Scottish Cup triumph in 1991 before signing for Celtic in 1994.

Over the next five years he made 114 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals and he was part of the Hoops squad which won the league championship in 1998.

A year later he moved south to Sheffield Wednesday where he remained until 2004 when he returned to Motherwell.

Everyone connected with Celtic Football Club is absolutely devastated at the news of Phil’s death. He was a tremendous professional with every club he played for, and in his second spell at Motherwell proved to be a great example to all the younger players at the club.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Phil’s family, friends and team-mates at Motherwell at this desperately sad time.

The flags at Celtic Park are flying at half-mast as a mark of respect.

RIP.

Heard this on the radio driving home from work. Very sad news and very scary at the same time. Players collapsing on the park is becoming all to frequent these days.

Thoughts and prayers with his family and friends.

His nephew was on the pitch playing for Motherwell at the time he collapsed and had to be substituted as he was obviously distressed after seeing his uncle collapse.

Very sad.

Whats going on here? Why is it becoming more frequent? Surely medical screening is better than it used to be?

This is at least a half reasonable question. Top-end teams run players through full MRI scans on a fairly regular basis to not only diagnose, but where possible considering the players particular role (and the club's investment) anticipate any problems. It's not certain, but you would think it likely that a specialist would screen the results for any potential illness or congenital disorder....maybe they do, I don't know.

Despite all that, I can't help but notice that these awful occurences have not happened (so far as I recall) to any player from one of the really BIG teams, here or abroad where the club would be wealthy enough to do this kind of thing - maybe the Sevilla lad, hard to say.

Have to mention about wee faddy's tribute to Phil after he scored against Boro.

Although he is a bitter it was a nice touch.
