Jezzman Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...3000173,00.html Benitez laughs off transfer reportsLiverpool boss Rafa Benitez has dismissed reports that restrictions have been placed on him in regard to strengthening his squad in January. The Spaniard had a much-publicised disagreement over transfer-window plans with American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks last month, but that was all cleared up at a meeting last weekend following the defeat against Manchester United. "In our meeting we talked about how to go forward, but we did not talk about the need to sell before we could buy," said the Liverpool boss. "We don't know exactly (what money will be spent). We need to find the players who can be good for us - I think we will be okay." On his own future, Benitez admits he would like to extend his stay beyond the end of his current contract - which is due to expire in 2010 - but he has not raised the issue with the Americans. "I have two-and-a-half years left on my contract, and I will be really pleased if they offered me another. I would say 'yes' - but I'm not expecting one." Captain Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres are expected to return against Portsmouth, having missed the Carling Cup match with stomach upsets. Midfielder Xabi Alonso is back in contention after a 60-minute run-out at Stamford Bridge, having recovered from a broken foot, but England forward Peter Crouch is suspended after his sending-off against the Blues.

If that's accurately reported that's a pretty devasting comment.
pipnasty Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 If that's accurately reported that's a pretty devasting comment. Not necessarily - it could actually be read a number of ways and Rafa himself has been at pains to point out that his English isn't as good as he would like it to be. We are not going to have another 20 page thread about the 'new crisis' are we?
McBain Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 At least he's being realistic And i'm not sure why he'd want to continue working for them to be honest. He deserves a lot better
tomski Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Not necessarily - it could actually be read a number of ways and Rafa himself has been at pains to point out that his English isn't as good as he would like it to be. We are not going to have another 20 page thread about the 'new crisis' are we? Rafa's been here 4 years, his english is more than good enough. In the current context saying something like that is a bit odd.
smicer07 Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Not really, if he has 2 years left, why would he expect a new one?
pipnasty Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 (edited) Rafa's been here 4 years, his english is more than good enough. Not according to Rafa it isn't. So, he believes that his contract won't be re-newed at any point - I would be expecting his resignation any day soon then. Edited December 22, 2007 by Pipnasty

We are not going to have another 20 page thread about the 'new crisis' are we? While I don't think it's "devasting" per se, it's just a f*cking bizarre thing to say, particularly when he must have known he would have been asked about a new contract as it has been in the news this week. How do you read it?
McBain Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Not really, if he has 2 years left, why would he expect a new one? We need to make sure we dont let him leave on a Bosman
Guest Prongsy Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 A complete mix up of English. It means he doesn't expect to be offered a contract at the moment (whilst he still has 2 1/2 years left) not that he'll never be offered a contract.

Coyler Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 (edited) Aye Spanish waiter.... Shut up, you. Your sensationalist thread title did half the damage. I did sort of wonder why more wasn't made of this bombshell in the article itself ... :muppet: Edited December 22, 2007 by Coyler

I don't think he will and I think there might be more in his words than you think...
Coyler Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Let's see if he gets offered a new contract. I don't think he will and I think there might be more in his words than you think...The second bit was aimed at myself and the "shut up, you" was meant playfully.
Jezzman Posted December 22, 2007 Author Posted December 22, 2007 The second bit was aimed at myself and the "shut up, you" was meant playfully. No worries...

We're getting a bit quick on the paranoia button round here at the mo. Who knows? In 2.5 years, many may be begging him to leave - football changes liken that.
