MUNTARI GOES FOR KOP SPOT

By Lee West 22/12/2007

Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari has vowed to put a further dent in Liverpool's title hopes today to earn himself a move - to Anfield.

Muntari is being lined up by Reds boss Rafael Benitez for a £7million switch.

The Ghana powerhouse admits he would relish the chance to play for one of the Premier League's big four clubs.

Muntari, 23, said: "It is my dream to play for one of the big four. My heart is at Portsmouth, but you never know what the future holds.

Advertisement"When I played for Udinese I made my debut in the San Siro and I love showing what I can do in stadiums like that.

"I have never played at Anfield before and have only seen it on TV.

It looks like an amazing stadium and I'm looking forward to showing what I can do on the big stage.

"I enjoy pitting my wits against the best players. That is why I enjoy playing football.

"Liverpool are a great side with fantastic players like Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and we will have to play well to beat them.

"But we have done well away from home and are confident we can go there and win. That is the belief we have at this club."

Muntari has warned Gerrard and Co he will take no prisoners - even if it earns him a rollicking from his girlfriend.

He has racked up five yellow cards and one red since joining Pompey from Udinese in the summer and gets a ticking off from former Miss Ghana, Menaye Donkor, every time he makes a late tackle.

Muntari, booked nine times and sent off three times in 16 games in Serie A last season, added: "I get angry when she tells me 'Baby, you should not have done that', even when I have done nothing wrong.

"I have picked up too many cards but I am a winner and cannot change the way I play."

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp cannot wait for the trip to Anfield - as he knows he will not get abused by the Kop fans.

Redknapp was involved in an angry row with Aston Villa supporters during Pompey's 3-1 win at Villa Park on their last away trip.

Redknapp said: "There's no chance of me getting abused there. Their fans have a great sense of humour and the banter is good."

Why not give youth a chance?

Spearing is better than Sissoko

Nemeth will probably make more of an impact that Voronin

etc

Muntari could be defined as "youth" as well seing as he's only 23...

sorry let me clarify.. home-grown players or players who we've brought into the reserves.

Yeah I got that much from your first post. I was trying to say that there's apparently something that places proven pl players ahead of our reserves, no matter how good they are. I think it's connected to the crawing for instant succes. Instant succes means that there's not time to gently add the yournger players from reserves to first team players. This day and age everything needs to be done in a hurry, right here, right now.... I personally blame the football manager games :)

are you serious?

Yes I'm serious.

There are better players in our Reserves than Sissoko.

Are there better players in the ressies than Mascherano?

Are there better players in our Reserves than Sissoko at what Sissoko does best? Spearing looks like he might well become a "better player" in his time but I fear throwing him into some massive game on rabid-tasmanian-devil detail might affect his development somewhat, no?

Heard last week that Crouch was off in January, same person that told me about Rafa 3 weeks before it happened and Torres 2 weeks before it happened. Im guessing its based on his contract situation, if we dont sell soon or get him to sign a new contract we wont get much for him.

I think the squad is being reshaped to rely on 2 or 3 players coming through the youth and reserve teams into the first team but it takes time, only now are we seeing the quality of young players that are progressing into the reserves, i think very soon we'll see 2 or 3 places in the 1st team squad filled by the best young players we have instead of players costing millions on big wages.

Its obvious from the number of top young players we're bringing into the club that this is a strategy from Rafa to groom players for the 1st team squad instead of buying them in. It makes financial sense you only have to have 1 or 2 players make it every few seasons and its been worthwhile, plus of course those that don't quite make it can still demand decent fees if their sold.

I'm hoping to see Carson, Crouch, and Sissoko* sold in the Jan window

*subject to signing Mash

Think you're spot on about the plan. Dont want to sound like a broken record, but it's going to be essential we have quality coming through

I'm guessing it's more likely to be due to his crapness.

Its been obvious Crouch is available for transfer for a while now. I expect him gone in January. I just hope we get what he's worth.

As for bringing through the youth players, yes ideally we'd do that. Do we have a striker ready to fill Crouch's boots ? I don't think so. I'd rather give Nemeth a try than persist with both Kuyt and Voronin though. One of those two has to go but clearly we'll have to keep them at least for the rest of the season.

No-one's saying the likes of Spearing & Nemeth are the saviours but they surely couldn't do much worse than Sissoko or Voronin as 4th choices for their positions right now.

Do we have a decent left back in the ressies?

Insua looked fine last season when he played a few games in the first team, maybe not ready for lots of games but he needs to progress soon, with Arbeloa and Aurellio able to play left back it is a position where we could sell Riise and not necessarily be weaker, and then use the money to strengthen elsewhere.

I echo the thoughts about Spearing, insua and Nemeth. We should ease them in slowly in some games this season.

I'm not confident that much is going to happen other than sales TBH.

I am confident that we will see at least one of Carson, Riise, Sissoko, Crouch and Pennant going at the break. We could see as many as four of those going.

As far as a wish list is concerned though, I'd be delighted if we signed any of Garay, Nasri or Benzema. Khaladze and Ujfaluši seem to be the most likely candidates however.

Some decent players who would be worth a look at would be Van der Vaart (I'm serious this time, he's supposed to be unsettled), Kompany, Naldo, Diego and Lahm (Man Utd are on him). This kid Renato looks really promising too. Of course, the money situation makes all this something of a fantasy...

Does anyone have a list of the Bosmans who are available?

I hope a Dutch side comes back for Kuyt, that would be my best Xmas present :)

It would leave us very short considering Crouchie will be off.
