Something that came up elsewhere that I thought warranted a thread of it's own, as there's probably a fair few people on here who are getting stung by this. Maybe it's been mentioned before.

 

BT and some other ISPS now limit or block outright the ports used by bittorrent and other p2p protocols, so if you're experiencing really useless speeds with these, that's why.

 

My friend is getting literally 1kbps and less through BT with the same application and setup as me.

As it uses the same protocol, it could screw Sopcast for you too in theory.

 

The ISPs doing this without informing the customers could be illegal, Orange are apparently doing it too, and in the states some ISPs such as Comcast, are being sued for doing this. Some UK ISPs like fast.co.uk are now advertising that they do not block any protocols.
