madaboutlfc Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Our Carra has improved beyond belief since Rafa took over and defensively turned in to one of the best in the league but the way he hoofed the ball when under no pressure was dinconcerting as giving away the ball is criminal at any level.. if we are to improve we need ball playing centre halves..
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 He is a good solid defender, very good with Agger because Agger is the ball player. When Carra is left with no ball carrier next to him, he hoofs it.
The_Adder Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 He is a good solid defender, very good with Agger because Agger is the ball player. When Carra is left with no ball carrier next to him, he hoofs it. Why doesnt he just like not hoof it and give it a full back or something...?!
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Why doesnt he just like not hoof it and give it a full back or something...?! Riise is like the plague, everyone knows that Dunno really, biggest flaw in his game.
Guest RedLegend Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Why doesnt he just like not hoof it and give it a full back or something...?! Like Riise? Big problem is apart from Agger been missing who can actually take the ball out of defence and pass it we also have Alonso missing who is the central mifielder who usually makes himself available to take the ball from the defenders. With both of them out there is too much aimless hoofing going on.
Stevie H Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 He is a good solid defender, very good with Agger because Agger is the ball player. When Carra is left with no ball carrier next to him, he hoofs it.not strictly true. he's not had alonso there to take the short pass and get an attack moving for ages either.
Guest JV Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Can he stop disimproving first? Would be a good start.
NWR Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 A couple of times in the second half yesterday he took the ball forward on a run into our half. Our lot backed off and backed off and as he got closer to our 18 yard area it was like you could see him thinking "What the f*** am I doing here? What the f*** do I do now?" He then turned sideways and started looking for someone to come and take the ball off him quick. Grat defender though.
The Hitman Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) He's a bloody great defender, one of the top 3/4 in the league. Can we get any better?f***ing right we can't. Ridiculous to be questioning him when there are other areas of the side which are desperately lacking ie.left wing, another striker, maybe right wing. What about the goal saving tackle when he beat Rooney to that cross from the right wing? He's not there to create goals,or to "distribute the ball".That's what centre mids are for.Crap post. Close all the passing options and let the CB advance well beyond the half way line. Ball inevitably given away with ambitious/hopeful pass. Hit vacated space quickly. Another thing: Carragher is wasting far too much time and energy these days hopping, checking his step and rolling the ball under his sole when in possession. Stop it.

That tackle on Rooney was great. That bit where he had the ball on the edge of the box under no pressure and kicked it straight up into the air to himself was something you wouldn't have seen two years ago from him, though. He has looked distinctly and uncharacteristically dodgy or nervy at times this season. Nothing wrong in saying that. He's a hero and a legend but if he's not performing to the standard he was a year and a half or two year ago then are you just supposed to close your eyes and imagine a few heroic blocks from Istanbul? Or hope that the opposition strikers do?
AJ The Red Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Carra obviously aint going to get any better as he is 30 ish now.He is a great defenderbut (i dont agree with hitman) his distribution is poor and prob wont change.Hopefully one of our youngsters will ease him out of the team in 2-3 years but until then id say we wont get anyone better. Hansen is a classic example of someone who could do carras job and distribute the ballAgger is closer in that respect and i think we need him back yesterday to give hyyia a restwho to be fair has done great.

He hasn't been great this year, but he's been good enough, our defensive record proves that.He is the least of our worries. How good is Terry's distribution? Vidic? Edited December 17, 2007 by The Hitman
Guz Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Jamie is probably the worst for giving the ball away but he wasn't the only one yesterday. Even Riise passed the ball better than Arbeloa and Sami and that's saying something.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I've never seen any defender perform to the Jamie Carragher standard of a year and a half ago. Hyypia some five or six years ago was a better defender than carragher has ever been. And that's just the last liverpool centreback I can think of. I am sure there are plenty on here who can roll out the golden oldies like hansen, lawrenson et al and that's not even mentioning recent non-lfc defenders like maldini, nesta, cannavaro, thuram, stam and the like. He was very very good at the time, still very good when he gets his act together, but he was never quite in the same echelon as the absolute best in the game.
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Hyypia some five or six years ago was a better defender than carragher has ever been. i'mnorravintha
fred milne Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Hyypia some five or six years ago was a better defender than carragher has ever been.Without doubt.
psl Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Sami at his best is the best defender I've seen play for the club. I'll never forget his performance against Barcelona in the UEFA Cup semi at Anfield, he was absolutely awesome that night.
stressederic Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Hyypia some five or six years ago was a better defender than carragher has ever been. That's a big shout. Difficult to pick the bones out of that one.
Benzo-13 Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Sami's a living legend. Statue material in my book. Wish he'd get that league medal. Fixed our defence overnight from the horror it was before!!
Guest GrandpaSimpson Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 i'mnorravintha People forget just HOW good Sami was. Even yesterday, he was great. Legend.
