aside from today this is a general commentary on him, having spoken to mates in the past week who are fans of various other sides. . . .stevie's now suddenly 27 years old and does not have a defined position. it's a ludicrous situation, he's not a defined centre mid in any intelligent side and he doesn't seem to want to do the nedved / zidane thing of starting out wide and then floating. he was nowhere today and ended up getting bossed by a brasilian kid. it's crunch time, he needs get his f***ing head straight about what he wants to be and what he wants to be remembered as. . . .and it might be a point on rafa too, tell him to do a f***ing role and stick to it.

Defensively I thought he was pretty good today. I fail to believe he played so deep because he couldn't get past Anderson, he must've been told to seriously considering his runs carefuly because he was doing a lot of defensive work.

Didn't think he was that bad today. Apart from the fact that he was playing a little deep. He made a few important interceptions and tackles when he hared back to help out the defence. Didn't see enough of him going forward though but once they scored the mancs had loads of bodies back behind the ball. Nobody could seem to get any space to work with in their half.

I know how to fix it.

Sell him. :bleh:

Stupidly unfunny jokes aside, I agree.

He's absolutely 'headless chicken'-like at times and needs to pull him self together.

On the other hand, I don't believe he's the one we should be worrying about at the moment.

Not much complains about him. He wasnt "bossed" by a brazillian kid. Anderson is going to be some player one day, but he didnt neutralize gerrard in any way yesterday. I think gerrard was under instruction to stay back, if that was truly the case, you can say he did his job well.

Against the better teams, I think he's better off on the right. ;)

i think after all these yaers, too much is still placed solely on Stevies shoulders as captain. Too many around him just do not cut it making his burden all the heavier and thereby he never gonna to perform to hs best week in week out.

Hes just afantastic player playing with lesser ones as his collegues..... unfortunately

Yes, totally agree. And to say Anderson [average at best] bossed him is a joke. Why don't people say how Mascherano bossed Tevez. I get fed up how fickle our supporters are. We outplayed the Scum virtually the whole game and lost.....but listening to many here you'd think they were such a wonderful team and we got spanked.....If they are so much better than us then why the f*ck didn't we lose 2-0, 3-1 or more?

Who out of the Mancs would you rather have than Gerrard......FFS don't say Placcy, he was totally played out of the game by....errr Riise!!

Lucas should have come in for Mascherano after 60 minutes.

i disagree. our wide players clearly were not performing and mach was doing a great job breaking down play. at this stage in the game we're losing and the clock is counting down. for me the crouch and babel subs make complete sense, but riise/aurelio is a bit confusing. i suspect *if* rafa didnt have these "crunch talks" and damage limitation on this mind he would have gone all out and subbed yosi at around 70 minutes, moved gerrard out wide and had lucas move into his position centrally. thus sorting out the flanks and keeping our defence protected.

Maybe our wingers would have played better with better distribution from central areas.I suggested Mascha to be subbed coz he got a yellow card at that point.I agree with your idea about subbing, but I would like to have been like that from the start with Gerrard on the right or a 4-3-3 with Kuyt & Kewell as wingers.

I find it insulting that he's put above players like Whelan when he's not good enough to lace their boots. A fantastic player yes, but world class? b******s!

Gerrard?

Deary me.

You're not wrong. He was wasted today, doing the midfield donkey work, we saw nothing of him getting forward nd going at them, and we lack conpsoure without an Alonso or a Lucas centrally.

The 40-yard passes into touch really grate in these games. Stick him wide, let him float. End of.

Without Alonso we'd have been a bit light in central midfield if Gerrard hadn't played there. A agree with the suggestions that Lucas would have been a good gamble to make late on in the game, but starting with him at CM would have been asking for trouble.

But if Alonso and Mascherano could have played CM then we'd certainly have been better with Gerrard at RM. Delivery into the box was one of our biggest problems yesterday and that's something Gerrard excels at.

If Utd can turn up at Anfield with a 19 yr old Brazilian in CM then I don't see why we couldn't have started with Lucas.

We were crying out for someone to put his foot on the ball. Instead, we were left with Gerrard trying to hit Torres early with practically every pass he made in the first hour.

I was surprised that Lucas didn't come on after 60 minutes for Benayoun and moved gerrard on the right.

Anderson has played away to arsenal and liverpool now, can't understand why we are so scared about putting Lucas in the team more.

I can think of at least one other team that would have risked a 20-year old Brazilian midfielder in a game liek this....
