So many false dawns over the last few years but its like groundhog day.

We are improving as a team at the moment only to get to a stage where we was a few years earlier. Nothing ever changes, we have players capable of doing so but our mentality is not quite there.

Its a shame really for a club as big as Liverpool FC but I can see us waiting a lot longer for that Premiership trophy.

Kind of depressing but I wouldn't change a thing, what other teams have produced as many great nights as us over the last few seasons? none.

There's always next season

Emmm ... or next Wednesday.

Carling cup?

Hardly something worthwhile.

We just need to add a couple of quality players up front. We are a very solid compact team. We just lack those players who possess flair and invention. Signing torres and babel was a step in the right direction but not enough to transform in league winners.

Today although we dominated for long periods during the match, we just could not creack utd s defence due to the fact that we do not have enough quality inventive players upfront.

EDIT: I hope Gillett and Hiks who were at Anfield witnessed, and admits this fact and give Rafa enough money to buy the players we need.

Stupid comment. It's a trophy, therefore it's very worthwhile.

Not compared to the trophy we all want.

So? It's still a trophy. We exist to win trophies.

We strive to win the major trophies.

I hope we do win the Carling cup but its regarded as 'micky mouse', not something to be overjoyed about winning. Especially when a lot of teams play inferior sides in it.

A strike partner for Torres with more quality than Kuyt would have been useful today but our real problems were in midfield - too many hopeful balls from Gerrard. Whatever happened to pass and move?

It is a trophy which simply adds nothing to the clubs' prestige or status. If we were west brom, sunderland etc then yes...but in the liverpool scenario we aim to win the most prestigious trophys.

Yeah, it's described as that by people like yourself.

You wouldn't be overjoyed at winning a trophy at Wembley against possibly Arsenal or the s****? You're a f***ing t*** then.

By upfront i mean on the wings as well. Kewell Yossi Pennant Voronin and Kuyt for different reasons are avreage players. We need to substitue a couple of palyers from that list with world class players.

Not really, just sick of bellends disrespecting part of our own history and this competition.

It's quite clearly bottom of the rank in terms of trophies to win this season but "hardly worthwhile"? Nah

We've had some amazing nights in this competition. And if we win on Wednesday then the 6k there will have had another great night.

That is exactly what I thought. Man u have been spending 20-30m on players for 6-7 years, from Veron and Van Nistelrooy, through Ferdinand, Rooney and Tevez (though I know he's on loan, he's hardly free and costing top wages and rental)

We've done it once, we need to add a couple more top top Torres class players to the squad, that's where we were short today.

I hope G+H don't think one £20m player automatically means we've caught up with man u and the chavs who have 7 or 8 of them. Though I don't think we need 7 or 8.

The mancs paid £17m for a sub midfielder in Carrick and £14m for Nani.

Most of United buys are big purchases.

Problems today:

Kuyt is a good player, and value for money at £9m, but he is not Torres class (nor is he Rooney / Tevez class, both of whom cost, or will cost, £15m+ more than Kuyt) and why was he always on the wing?

Riise needs a good hiding, he does not lack ability, just a f*cking brain. His shooting addiction is really costing us. The 1 screamer in 100 attempts is really not worth it. Why is Riise's name so often the last one you hear in a Liverpool attack. Aurelio should be starting if fit

The whole defence, JC included were hoofing it far too early, and unnecessarily.

Gerrard and Masch did not dominate the midfield anywhere near as much as they should of done. Though possession showed they had the better of it, Hargreaves and Anderson v Gerrard and Masch? Should be a mismatch, it wasn't.

Benyoun looked a little out of his depth either that or overwhelmed by the occasion. Not saying get rid, a good squad player, but we can't carry him, Riise and Kuyt while Gerrard, Masch and Torres where not playing at 100% Kewell I thought did OK, but the others we know can do a lot better.

Nani and Anderson cost £17m each according to reports. Other than that, not sure what your point is? Are you agreeing with me?

Kewell was rubbish today, It was partly his fault for the goal. Losing the ball on the half way line.

This has been said for years now....since the Houllier years when we got beat by a Giggs double or the previous year when Forlan scored twice.

We lost 1-0 against Man Utd in Benitez's first season at Anfield with players like Traore, Pellegrino and Nunez.

Have we improved? yes. So what's the problem?

Our squad is much better but one the problems is mentality. The team is not prepared for the big games. Our team is not as good as Man Utd. OK. But we should be beating Man Utd or at least getting a draw at our stadium. Our team is capable of at least that. Benitez must recognize that.

Another problem is Man Utd may be making more strides in the transfer market each season than us but Liverpool's problem under Benitez is one of mentality.

Houllier had worse teams and managed to get important wins. Look at the team that beat Man Utd at Old Trafford the season that he was sacked.

For that to happen it would actually require them to understand the game of football though, wouldn't it?

Is there any evidence or reason to think that they do? If they knew the game they'd have seen that Mascherano was one of our best players today and would give Rafa the moeny for him but I'm not optimistic about them at the moment.

Torres was quiet today as he is entitled to be from time to time. Our problem is, as you say, the lack of others to crack open the defence when he isn't on top form. I think most of us felt at the start of the season that we needed at least one other in his class - whether that meant shelling out another big fee for someone like Villa or (irony of ironies) trying to get Tevez on a similar deal to the Mascherano one. If you give them Giggs as their qeuivalent of Gerrard in the sense that he is a world-class home-grown talent then it is obvious that they have to had to shell out big money for the rest of their attacking threats (Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez's wages and eventual fee, the likes of Van Nistelrooy in the past).

So you are right about what needs to happen, but probably overly optimistic about whether it will.

If we dick Chelsea and then the blues**** over two legs to go to Wembley and lift the trophy I couldn't care less what people think about our prestige or status

It's not about the players. Our squad is not so far behind that we have just one goal in 7 league fixtures against the Mancs. I think Rafa's preparation of the players ahead of these big league fixtures is lacking.
