Beach hols in Italy

My daughters have been moaning that they want a holiday in Japan but me and the missus would like to get back to Europe for a visit to see mates/family etc. coupled with a beach holiday.

We've compromised on a trip that will mean a few days in Tokyo, followed by a few days in Paris (split between galleries and Eurodisney), overnight sleeper to Rome for a couple of days, then a beach holiday, then a couple of days back in Liverpool before heading back to Oz.

It sounds ideal but I really want the beach part to be a good 5-6 days of relaxation.

The travel agent recommends spending the time in Amalfi (or that area) but I know next to feck all about the place. Anyone been there or have good accommodation recommendations? To clarify our requirements - we originally thought of spending our time on a small Greek Island with no lager louts, quiet beaches and intimate tavernas. I'm guessing Amalfi will have busy beaches and I have no idea of the evening facilities (restaurants etc).

Italy appeals to me as I've not spent more than 24 hours there before but I am keen for the small village feel. If you have other Italian recommendations then I'd love to hear them.
