WTF?!

Has he been at the Christmas sherry early doors?

  Quote
Former Everton boss Howard Kendall has said he would like to be the next Republic of Ireland manager.

Kendall revealed he had made enquiries about succeeding Steve Staunton and that he would like ex-England star Peter Beardsley to be his number two.

"I have had long enough out of it now and I feel it would be perfect for me and hopefully for them," he said.

Kendall, 61, also managed in Spain and Greece and had spells in charge of Manchester City and Sheffield United.

His last managerial job in England was his second spell at Everton, which came to an end in 1998, but it was during his first spell at Goodison Park that the club enjoyed major success.

In a six-year period in the 1980s the club won the league twice, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Kendall rejected any suggestion his time away from management would count against him.

"Look at the CV and go through the history of what I have done," he said.

He's only 61? He looked that in the mid 80s.

That makes him only about 4 years older than Kenny! :o

According to Wiki he wouldn't even have reached his 40th birthday at the time of the 86 Cup Final. Jeezus.

He must have looked well older than he was.

I was shocked when I saw he was player manager around 1984 - I thought he'd have been about 50!

Likes a beer? On the cheap? No real recent experience in top level football management?

Clearly gonna be close to the top of Delaney's picks.

All he needs to do now is find an investment they can both put a few quid into together.

He was interviewed on Off The Ball last night and it was hilarious - here is the gist of it from his answers, which were very patchy and unsure;

I noticed the job when Terry Venables was linked to it and thought 'hang on, I have a better CV than Terry'. I think the job would suit me as I dont want day to day management and the Ireland job would fit in with that. I dont know alot about the young potential players but I do know you have a good goalkeeper in Shay Given and at Everton, Neville Southall was our rock so I know the importance of a good keeper - other than that, I like the Irish people from being on tour with Everton there. Also, I would be looking to bring in an enthusiastic and energetic asst manager to help me - its Peter Beardsely but Peter has not confirmed if he will join me and I cant say too much as he is under contract at Newcastle but I dont think it would be a problem.

It was a shockingly poor interview and he knew f-all about Ireland apart from Shay Given, at least he knew Italy and Bulgaria were in our group. When asked how he would approach the qualifiers he said "I would look to organise the players properly and your players should have enough about them to do a job" - insightful, eh !!

I think it is about time to re-tell the story of my late father and his 'Lime Street incident' with Howard K.

Like Mr. K, my father 'liked a drink' - especially in the daylight hours. They had bumped into each other a few times in different drinking locations and my dad had told me he didn't like him as all he did was bad mouth Liverpool and how as he got drunker his bitterness increased.

One day, I was crossing the main concourse at Lime Street station with my dad (surprisingly sober) when I noticed my dad dart quickly to one side and then rush down the escalator toward Mersey Rail underground. At the same time, there was a major kerfuffle all around me - and then I noticed Mr. K on the floor with blood pouring out of his nose and people helping him up etc.

I caught up with my dad at home - and all he said was, "I always hated him and it was the first time I'd been sober enough to focus on just one of him and be able to punch him".

Whenever I hear his name, I think of my dad lamping him...

A good story about Kendall is when one of the Everton players (either Trevor Steven or Gary Stevens - always got them mixed up) went to the touch line for a swig of Lucozade during a break in play. The lad was gasping and nearly spewed on the pitch when he realised he'd necked half of Kendall's special Lucozade bottle that was full of neat vodka.

It was Gary Speed - that's why he left for Newcastle.

Fair play. I wasn't 100% on the player. The Gary Speed one I heard was that Kendall was rat arsed in the changing room at half time, so Speed went to speak to Peter Johnson about it. Johnson was having his half time dinner with some big nobs, so he didn't want to know about it, and then he jibbed Speed off for making a show of him.

A few words to the press and Speed was "s***house Speed" to their fans when really it was his genuine love for the club that made him kick off with Johnson. I think that story must have come from the s***house's mates.

King Kenny anyone?

Kenny Dalglish is interested in a return to football as the manager of Ireland.

The Scot, who almost became Irish boss after the departure of Jack Charlton, has told friends that he fancies the challenge of replacing Steve Staunton.

Liverpool legend Dalglish was mooted as a potential replacement consultant to Staunton when Bobby Robson's health problems appeared grave early in the Louthman's reign. While nothing came of that, Dalglish has kept an eye on the Irish the set-up and is understood to have indicated that he would like the FAI to know of his curiosity about the post.

Officially, the FAI are now refusing to comment on candidates as they insist that the process has been completely handed over to kingmakers Don Howe and Don Givens. Terry Venables remains the clear favourite to replace Staunton but it's believed that Howe and Givens have arranged, or will arrange, meetings with a number of other candidates and Dalglish may now appear on their radar. The 56-year-old has been out of football for seven years since his disastrous stint as Director of Football at Celtic alongside manager John Barnes.

f***in Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe are in charge of picking the guy, who knows who we'll end up with. C*nts.

Only in the bizarro world of the FAI does someone get to choose his own boss.
