I didn't see it. What did he say? (or do?!)

He just acted really bizzarely. Kept on repeating that he was focused on training his team and players when the question was nothing like that. He looked like a bull and sort of just got up and legged it. Vinnie O'Connor then went on to add 2+2 and got 31456.. Saying it may have something to do with a deal for mascherano and the Americas not releasing funds.

Maybe this will put it in some context?

Rafael Benitez has backed Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch to bounce back from their England disappointment when Liverpool travel to Newcastle United on Saturday. The Liverpool captain was one of a number of players who have come in for criticism following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, and while the Reds boss would not be drawn into the debate over the national team he did give his support for his skipper.

"I am only focused on my team and I will always give my 100 per cent support to Steven," commented Benitez. "His commitment is 100 per cent always and he will play as well as he always does for us.

"Crouch scored a great goal and he showed the quality he has. We are now looking forward to the Newcastle match.

"It will be a tough game as every one is in the Premier League, but we know if we can win we will be really close to the top of the table.

"It is a really important week coming up for us and I am fully focused on coaching and training my team."

By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

RAFA Benitez today sensationally refused to commit his future to Liverpool.

In an extraordinary Melwood press conference the Reds boss even allowed himself to be linked with the England manager's job, which was vacated earlier today by Steve McClaren.

The usually affable Benitez was clearly in a bad mood and chose his words carefully throughout the ten minute long press conference.

On several occasions he was asked the kind of questions which he usually answers without even thinking but instead of doing that he chose to brush them off with the same cryptic answer.

When asked about England's performance against Croatia, he responded: "I prefer to concentrate on training and coaching my team."

When asked about the threat Newcastle will pose to Liverpool on Saturday, he answered: "I am focusing on coaching and training my team."

He delivered the very same answer on at least ten more occasions.

One of the few questions Benitez was prepared to answer concerned the national team manager's job.

Asked if he would consider taking over from Steve McClaren if the job was offered to him, he said: "You never know what might happen, maybe."

Just last week, Benitez appeared to commit himself to a long term future with Liverpool when he talked of emulating the 21 years Sir Alex Ferguson has spent at Old Trafford.

But today's comments throw into doubt that previously held ambition and suggest all is far from well at Anfield.

The inference which could be taken from the press conference is that Benitez is not happy with the backing, or a perceived lack of it, he is receiving from the club's American owners.

The Reds boss gave this theory further credence when he admitted to being frustrated with life at Anfield but he would not expand on what he meant by this.

But by refusing to commit his future to the club and allowing himself to be linked with another job it appears he has basically delivered a "Back me or sack me" ultimatum to Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

He has been in that situation a number of times before in his Liverpool career and had not reacted in this way. What is the strangest part is how he jumped on the question about the possibility of being England manager. That came out of nowhere. What does everyone think?

I dont think he wants it or would even take it but he might well use it to get what he wants if the owners are being bells. All speculation though. It was very unlike him though but there could be 100s of reasons for that.

Absolutely.. That article by Barrett is the most speculative piece I have seen in a very long time. But, and this can't be over looked, his manner at the press conference was extremely strange and his mantra of training the players and concentrating was odd to say the least. If I am to put my two bobs worth in it may suggest that someone has been pressuring him to appoint or not to appoint a number two. Maybe to help him with the training and coaching. But then again I bet I am probably way off.

maybe he jsut has had a bad day, it happens to us all. every one of us have probably had bad days at work, and i'm sure the last thing we'd want to do is give a press conference to f***wits asking stupid questions.
