From BBC Gossip Column:

Bayern Munich have earmarked Rafa Benitez as a possible replacement for coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is out of contract next May. Discreet enquiries have been made about the Liverpool manager, who has previously rejected overtures from Inter Milan and Real Madrid. (Various)

Must be very discreet if various papers here in the UK have picked up on it!!

If Rafa left he'd be in huge demand around the world. The only place, and people, he isn't popular with is the English media and, bizarrely, a section of our fans.

It's some of the English, media, some of the English football public and some Liverpool fans, also not lauded by some of the continental media, some of the Spanish media, some Valencia fans. Conversely, there are plenty of these types who think he's superb.

On the whole, his reputation has grown and grown since joining Valencia. If and when he ever leaves us there'll be a host of clubs wanting him. No doubt about that

i dont understand why they would be interested in other managers if they can sign hitzfeld(sp).he is a great manager.

dont see rafa going there.although the german league is much better then being credited for,i can onky see him go for real madrid, atletico, barca, valencia, milan or inter.

Of course, just pointing out it's ridiculous to assert he's not rated over here but is everywhere else, neither are true, there is no blanket.

This one is actually quite funny. I was reading the German "Kicker" magazine yesterday and there was a four page spread questioning Hitzfeld's future with all sorts of charts and tables of stats to support the story. The thing that Rummenigge and Hoeness have publicly been criticising him for since the Bolton result? You guessed it, too much rotation! Clearly if they don't want a change from that, they should chase Rafa

I think it's actually the opposite: the German League is much worse than it's typically credited for. The reputation of the Bundesliga as being one of the top Leagues comes from a different era.

Odd reaction to this kind of story really. I wouldn't be fussed at all if Rafa left provided the replacement was good

What is odd is you not being fussed if Rafa left, especially after all that underachievment...

As long as we get SoMe1 GuD

Yes! There's load of good ones out there so he'd be easily replaced. And we'd get to spend a couple of seasons clearing out the deadwood again, on the cheap, while the new man brought in a few who can actually play. There'd be loads of really optimistic threads on here again too. For a while, anyway. Then, when the mood turns black again because we still haven't won the league (after say, 3 seasons?), we could bring in someone else good and do it all over again. Bring it on!

Suppose i should qualify my remarks. My reaction surprised me in that i figured i'd be very much against the idea of Rafa leaving but that wasn't the case. Is he the very best that's available? Are we achieving the peak of what we're capable of achieving? Not really no. If Rafa stays then great but i don't believe he's utterly essential in the pursuit of us winning the league. We're about to have our 4th season under him without a title.

Who's to say things would take a downward turn if he left? That's by no means certain. The stability argument is a strong one but not the only thing to take into account.

:D

For the average, clueless Joe like Macbain there, unfortunately familiarity breeds contempt. They think "hold on, it's been nearly 4 seasons without winning the leaque, lets get SuM1 guD in" without really looking at the overall picture.
