Question for any resident 'arl lads who have stood on the old Kop.

Would love to have stood there myself, but unfortunately never did (being 5 foot nothing, wouldn't have seen much anyway - thought I'd get that in before Jon Hall did).

But, being semi-serious :- Did you ever take a p_iss down a rolled up Echo on the Kop ?

I never did, was too young to go the pub before the match and my bladder could hold a can of Top Deck for 90 minutes or so.

I remember the crowd parting to allow a stream of piss to flood down sometimes and the floor of the Kop was damp everywhere.

I do remember the stink from it though. Horrible. Smelled like a car park lift in the Bronx.

something often over looked when people get nostalgic about the Kop. the place absolutely stank, it was like a bad pub toilet smell

stood on it from the late 80's onwards. never did, and never saw anyone else did. however it was more packed during the 60's. i think that is from where the legend comes from

likewise never saw it myself - heard the rumours and saw the trickles of what i presumed was piss - could have been a knocked over tea or the cartons of orange they used to sell in the ground.

i do remember the bogs being ankle deep in urine and actually flooding out of toilets towards the exit points and the flat bit near the food stands on occassion.

thinking about it - i think i'd sooner do a tinkle in a rolled up echo then wade thru the piss.

somehow my bladder was able to hold for the three or four hours on the kop.

LOts people at the back of the kop used to go and piss up against the back wall, and it did used to run down the Kop, nice. That said if your gaggin for a laggin, aint no alternative, apart from piss yer kecks.

No - not in 30 years or more of standing! However, you always managed to hear how somebody had, or knew somebody who had heard of somebody who had, or had pissed in someone's pocket (my Dad claimed it happened to him at Goodison during a derby).

But I always enjoyed my pie and cuppa - and still do.

no. never.

but yes it did whiff a bit - especially on a cold winters day...

I always thought that had as much to do with those big old fashioned overcoats people used to wear, with the weird smelling water-repellant in them - when they got wet on a cold day, they'd steam and stink in equal measure.

I went to a game against Leeds when they where our main contenders for the title. The official capacity was something like 52,000 but I'll bet there were more than 60,000 that day, Never been so squashed in The Kop. That was the first time I'd feared for my safety at the ground. Everybody pissed where they stood..there was no way you could get to the bog if your life depended on it.

Tghe problem with the Kop was there were no alleyways/gangways to get in and out with. At the end I was lifted off my feet for about 40 yards going out it was so packed.

That's right. You could have drowned in piss if you actually made it into the bogs.

I have vague recollections of paying a visit in the mid-late 80s and there'd been a big improvement by that time.

Swansea had the worst toilets ever.

Yep, and as me and my mate were young we couldn't say anything either or you'd just get told to get f***ed. Personally speaking, being not hugely tall I always had a knack of finding a great spot just behind a barrier only for some lanky 6ft sod to come and stand directly in front of me. Happy days

The best atmospheres I ever experienced though was Auxerre at home (and everyone pretending that they'd always rated Mark Walters) and Genoa when I could have sold my ticket to one of the Irish lads for £50 but my mate wouldn't let me leave him on his own - we were stood behind 2 Genoa fans and after the game, despite speaking Italian and having Genoa scarves they were trying to persuade everyone around them that they were our lot - you could see them thinking that they'd made a huge mistake and they weren't getting out alive and one of the proudest moments I've had as a Liverpool fan was at the end of the game when every Kopite around them shook their hands and wished them well for the next round.

Fantastic atmospheres at both those games, I seem to remember the Auxerre game only being about 2/3s full.
