Paisley Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Other than them both fielding 12 men and getting thrown out of the competition. Does a certain result in that match ensure we'll qualify IF we win our three remaining games?
budgie Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Probably a Marseille win. I think our best chance is that if they are qualified before we play them. I think a Porto win is the worst result.
Spike Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 and each team reduced to seven men. Points docked etc
Stevie H Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 we want marseille through by the time we have to go there in the last game.
realtarragona Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Marseille won't win another game in this group.

Sion Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Why do you think this? Marseille won't beat Besiktas in Turkey.
Sion Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 My post from two weeks ago is still on course. This is how things will hopefully go... Porto beat Marseille next gameweekWe beat Besiktas Table looks like 1 FC Porto 81 Marseille 73 Liverpool 44 Besiktas 3 Gameweek after that, We beat PortoBesiktas beat Marseille (at Besiktas, so very possible) Table looks like 1 FC Porto 81 Marseille 73 Liverpool 74 Besiktas 6 Gameweek after that,We beat Marseille - regardless of other result - we're through. Porto beat Besiktas 1 FC Porto 112 Liverpool 103 Marseille 74 Besiktas 6 Regardless of the other results, we need to beat Marseille. Other than a 1-0 win, any other type of win would put us ahead of them if we are level on points.

budgie Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Marseille won't beat Besiktas in Turkey. Ok - so let me work this out - if we beat Porto there are three scenarios: Marseille win: Marseille 10Porto 8Us 7 Draw: Marseille 8Porto 8Us 7 Beskitas win: Porto 8Marseille 7 Us 7 But I assume they'd go through if we tied as they'd be ahead based on beating us. Basically I think we're going to have to win both games Not unrealistic given our away form this season

That's why it was good Marseille lost tonight. Porto play away to us and Besiktas at home, possible they won't pick up anymore points, thus meaning if we beat them on agg (so that's 1-0, 2-0 3-1, 4-2 win etc.) we'll only need to draw at Marseille. budgie Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I thought Porto played Besiktas away already - might be wrong on that
AJ The Red Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 this is the uefa rule so looks like 2 wins , but i dont think porto will be this easy 6.05 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the groupmatches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among theteams in question;b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teamsin question;c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matchesplayed among the teams in question;d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;e) higher number of goals scored;f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,as well as its association, over the previous five seasons (see paragraph
Sion Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I thought Porto played Besiktas away already - might be wrong on thatthey did, my mistake
budgie Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 (edited) they did, my mistake I see the logic in what you saying were earlier though - opens up the possibility of two teams to slip up to let us in instead of one. I think bottom line we're going to have to win both. Edited November 6, 2007 by budgie

Sounds like it. I thought it would go to ET if it was 1-0, but obviously not.
Jim D Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Does that statement mean the number of goals scored away by the teams playing against each other or across the whole group? So eg 0-1 1-0 Results would be the same number of away goals scored so goes to point d), which is why that 8-0 scoreline could be important. A 0-1 2-1 would put us through?
