UEFA Champions League : Group A Table

24 October 2007 01:00

P W D L F A GD PTS

1 Marseille 3 2 1 0 4 1 3 7

2 FC Porto 3 1 2 0 3 2 1 5

3 Besiktas 3 1 0 2 2 4 -2 3

4 Liverpool 3 0 1 2 2 4 -2 1

How do we see it from now on folks?

We need to win all three remaining, but going away to Marseille won't be pretty. I just hope what happened under Houllier away at Marseille in the UEFA Cup, doesn't happen. We got out muscled for everything and of course, they had a certain Mr Drogba on fire that night. We just looked stale that night.

What result do we want from the next Marseille-Porto game?

If we don't finish 1 (ya right) or 2, I just hope we dont finish 3rd.

Porto should beat Marseille next gameweek, so then we need to win all 3 of our games, and win on agg versus Marseille (so that's 2-1 or better)

ideally we want Marseille to beat Porto...if we win against both Besiktas and Porto that'll put us on 7 points with Porto remaining on 5. Provided that Besiktas get nothing more than a draw from their game with Marseille then by the last round of games Marseille will have 11 points, we'll have 7, Porto will have 5 and Besiktas 4... given that we'll have a better aggregate record against Porto that'll mean we'll only need a a draw against Marseille to go thru with only 8 pts ;( think that will mean we have a tough draw in the second round (if we make it!)

if Porto draw with Marseille and we then beat Porto then going into the last round Marseille will either have 9 (2 draws) or 11 (draw with Porto, win against Besiktas), we will have 7, Porto will have 6 and Besiktas will have 3 or 4. in that case any win will do and we'll not have to worry about aggregates....(in fact we could end up on top with 10 pts!)

if Porto win against Marseille and Marseille beat Besiktas and we win our next two games then it gets really tricky...Marseille will have 10 pts, Porto will have 8 pts, and we will have 7 pts...at that stage we're into needed a win and a win by a certain margin ;( If however Marseille drop points against Besiktas then a straight win in Marseille will do the trick!

Ideal therefore is for Marseille and us to win the next two games...a draw will do for both clubs in the last match!

that clears things up....

Exactly and this is what we will need, because Porto will beat Marseille at home, Marseille are piss poor and they will never win this group.

We certainly won't. We might as well go out now because if we, by mischance, finish second in this group, we will be drawn against someone like Inter Milan or Barca so we might just as well finish with it now.

We should still at the very least be expected to finish third, with second an outside possibility.

However I recall a post by Knox_Harrington a while back about the potential for a great UEFA cup run on the cards here and I have to say I agree with him....

Porto beating Marseille could make things v ugly for us, but a draw or a Marseille victory would help us.

Our current form is not great, but that doesn't mean we can't win our remaining 3 group games (2 of which are over a month away - plenty of time to get into form or become even more dire than we are now).

If Porto and Marseille Draw, and then we beat Besiktas and Porto, we'd just need to equal or better Porto's result on the final matchday in order to qualify. Or, as Chewie pointed out, if Porto lose to Marseille, and we win our next 2 games, we'd only need a draw in Marseille to go through.

At the moment there are 438.6 different ways the group could finish. It's not looking good, but with 2 home games to come, we're certainly not out of it yet.

in 15 words or less (ish)

we win our 3 - we have 10. In that instance Besiktas can get no more than 9.

MAR win 2 of their last 3 - they have 13 & POR have a max of 8

POR win 2 of their last 3 - they have 11 & MAR a max of 10 - in that case it comes down to a head-head btw us & MAR, assuming we beat them all's good unless it's 1-0 & then it'd go to ET.
