jimmylibel Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 John Carew has told compatriot John Arne Riise that he should move to Aston Villa. Villa have been tipped to make a bid for Riise in January, with the Norwegian believed to be a long-standing target of manager Martin O'Neill. Now Carew has backed his countryman to link-up with him in the Second City. "It seems like John Arne wants to go, so I can't see why not?" Carew told Dagbladet. "There is a possibility. "He would fit in very well at Villa, so that would be a positive." Link
John am Rhein Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Will this make us Norwegian free for the first time since the early 90s? It could be ON!
floyd the barber Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) gareth barry, larson or melberg in exchange would do nicely Edited October 15, 2007 by Lets get Masched
Guest Kaizer Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Riise has stated that he wants to stay, but something in his comments sounded a bit insecure as well, even if like he said since he is used in the big games he take it as a sign he has a future with the club.
Benzo-13 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 We can buy this lad with the money!! Surely he's overdue a move here!
Knox_Harrington Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 By the way, where is the always interesting aka Dus?
Tommy Cockles Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Would be personally disaapointed to see him go. Some very selective memories on here regarding John. Some crucial big game top drawer goals against top opposition e.g Barca, Mancs, Chelsea, Arsenal, and even some small clubs (Everton) Great attitude, never less than 100%, yet a few misplaced passes and the odd defensive lapse and the "Forum Sages" bleat and the sheep follow suit. There's plenty that have offered far less than John Riise to the cause during their Anfield careers. Hope he stays.

FAR worse players than him at the club over the last 6 years, always thought he was pretty handy to have.

Not good enough, and most importantly, he annoys the f*** out of me.
ManOfSteel Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 What I don't understand about Riise is that he was very good in our best season under Rafa - but he never really built on it and (I feel) he regressed significantly since then. He frustrates the hell out of me. If he could find his form of two years ago, I'd think it'd be insane to sell him - but as things stand now I don't think it would be a big loss provided it allows us to bring in the right players.
Falconhoof Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Its a position we can significantly improve on. Thats all that matters.

Not wholly convinced on the 100% every week front but take the general point. Regardless there aren't many who have played as consistently poorly during the last twelve months for Liverpool; he has stank and continues to stink the place out. He hasn't strung two good games together for twelve months. He can't survive on the clean sheets record when Sami hasn't (as a first choice player) - if we had an Agger he'd be a Sami by now. In fact as he's a saleable asset, which Sami arguably isn't to any great degree, had we found an Agger he'd probably be gone by now. It's the combined fitness issues of Aurelio and Kewell, along with the Heinze saga which have led to him staying this season in my opinion. He either needs to buck up and get back to where he was two years ago or he needs to leave. It's as simple as.

billybunter Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 bit miffed by the fact that he wants to go, not sure why he would want to go and to villa of all places. would be happy to see him go, especially after that CL medal sell out

growler Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I actually think his form is affected by the fact he wasn't offered a new contract in the summer despite begging for one, and the search for another left back. he has been an almost ever present in what has been one of europes best defences. Yes, there is always room for improvement but if he was brazilian or french and we would be happier with him. I don't see what Carlos did that Riise didn't. We all want an attacking full back, and yes he has his faults but there are not many other full backs who can defend, have the energy and attacking sense of Riise.

He's neither adequate defensively nor does he have the general range of skills to contribute to our attacking play from the full back position. If we play him at all it should be at LM where he can get into range of goal and have a few shots.
