Benitez beats Real to 'new Messi'

20070929 13:59

Liverpool have signed a 16-year-old Argentinian prospect from Real Madrid - who is being dubbed the 'new Leonel Messi'.

Rafael Benitez has swooped to capture the schoolboy star from the Spanish giants, taking advantage of the same loophole in junior contracts that enabled Arsenal to snap up Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.

Gerardo Bruna will arrive at Anfield on a three -year deal, carrying a big reputation after dazzling performances in midfield for the Real youth set-up.

Spanish newspaper AS reports the deal today as a major blow for the Madrid club who had likened his talent to that of Messi.

Bruna is half Spanish and has an EU passport which means he won't need a work permit to play in England.

Does that mean we can do the same they do and try to pass him off as a product of our Academy if he comes good?

yes - which should mean he wont count as a foreigner :-)

Fibs was saying just the other day, that we should b ging after the next generation of stars rather than buying say Ronaldo or Henry

Personally I think this is just a little too next generation ;) I had more the F Torres thing in mind

Where did you hear this?

I remember United being linked with a similar sounding player a week ago for like £1m, think it was some paper from the BBC gossip column saying they'd won the race with Chelsea. Another website informs me he may be a Liverpool fan after a quick google search.

Radio City have been saying all day that we've won the race to sign him but he'll stay at burnley until next season. His fathers mate that houses him in burnley is reported to have influenced him being a big red.

Mate of mine teaches PE at a British army school in Germany and apparently had a fixture against a school that Koffi was at at the time a year or so back. Didn't know his name then but told me about this lad at the time, said he was unbelievable, just took the piss. Great athlete, really quick. He then mentioned that he had gone to Burnley and said something a few months back that he had heard hew as coming to us, so assume this has to be the same lad.

Obviously only school football like so doesn't mean too much, but just passing it on.

It'll be a 3 hour game though. Will Hanks play the manager?

Sounds good, heard of Kofi before but not the other lad. Kofi is meant to be class. There seems to be a trend of great young players developing at the smaller clubs again.

Koffi is one of the best talents in the country in his age range and is highly rated by many. I'm delighted we have got him.

This Bruna lad sounds decent too. ;)

Club Statement: John Cofie

Posted on: Mon 24 Sep 2007

Burnley Football Club's response to a story in the national media regarding 14-year-old protégée John Cofie.

A Sunday newspaper claimed that Cofie is been linked with a £1m move to either Manchester United or Chelsea.

However, Clarets manager Steve Cotterill insists the club are eager to see the highly-rated teenage striker remain at Turf Moor for the foreseeable future.

Cotterill said: "There are a lot of clubs looking at John, but unfortunately for them, he's our player.

"He's registered and on forms with us, so nobody can nick him, and that's really where it stands.

"There's a lot of speculation that we didn't really want, but scouts and agents all talk and we're just very lucky that we have a good 14-year-old with us."

Cotterill added: "He's a special talent for his age, which is why everybody wants him.

"He's a big strong lad who scores goals, but we want him to be a bit older and be a special talent with, and for us, so anyone playing games with John at the moment is not doing him any favours."

Cofie is the latest to roll off the conveyor belt of talent at Turf Moor.

Kyle Lafferty and Chris McCann were both fast-tacked into the first team squad a couple of years ago, while Jay Rodriguez was this year promoted from the youth team.

Cotterill added: "To be honest, I'm actually quite chuffed about it.

"I never had anyone phoning about anybody when I first came here, and now we've got some really good young players that everybody wants.

"We're quite flattered by that at Burnley really."

Head of youth development, Vince Overson, added: "We can never stop speculation about young players in the tabloid newspapers.

"However, we must be doing something right at this club and we just want to keep producing players that can go in our first team.

"In the last few years we have done that and we will continue to concentrate on looking after and nurturing our young players."

??? it's a week old, they could have easily been swayed by a big move from us. Anyway if he's under the age of 16 can he not move and a tribunal set the fee? how can he be 'on forms'?
