The_Adder Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Everything I've seen so far has been superb. If his name was 'JT' or 'Rio' and he had performed the way he has the past 18 months people would of been praising him to the high f***ing heavens. He seems to be really, really underrated. He's never really praised in the media (I have certainly never read an article on him alone) and he's isn't mentioned that much on here. I think the lad is class. When you think he's come here from a 2nd rate Danish league and performed the way he has (also considering he doesn't even like footy ) and the fact that he truly is one of those very rare commodities namely a 'ball playing centre back' all suggests to me he has performed at 'that level'. The only time I've seen him struggle was against was against Drogba in the 1st leg of the champs league semi final last season, but in the second leg he was immense, almost like he'd learnt how to play Drogba. £6m, what a bargain, considering Rio when for £28m and I wouldn't swap them for the world.
Bailo Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I was dreading the day when Sami couldn't make it through a season anymore. Dan has allayed all my fears, he's top top class. Added mobility and passing, love it when he brings the ball over the half way line, he should do it more.
Hassony Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 why do people care is someone is world class or not, if he does a good job for liverpool that is all that matters
CaptainXabi Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I think he's fantastic. We can probably start calling him world class when he has to play a big match with Hobbs or someone (i.e. he's the senior partner at the back) and still bosses it. I don't think that day is too far off.
Kahnee Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 why do people care is someone is world class or not, if he does a good job for liverpool that is all that matters He's only a good player if the tabloids say so
Gilps Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 There was a piece in the Guardian last season bemoaning the fact he hadn't made the shortlist for young player of the season. But I realise that doesn't quite fit the "they all hate us" script.

I didn't realise the Guardian came out fighting for him too.

I don't think that day is too far off. Good point. I don't think in itself that defines World class for a defender, but it's certainly something that you would expect from a World class defender. Agree that he's not there yet. I think that by the end of next season, beginning of the one after , he'll be regarded as amongst the top five central defenders in the world.

Rimbeux Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 why do people care is someone is world class or not, if he does a good job for liverpool that is all that matters In all seriousness, as long as they personally can handle it with a level head, a bit of hype in the press about our players can be helpful. Say with Agger it was negative, and the press continually alluded to him being bullied by physical players, would that not give his opponents confidence when taking him on, regardless of if it were true or not? So if he's praised as this strong centre half with great ability on the ball etc, it puts doubts in the stikers mind. It's going to help us no end the more hype Torres gets about his ability, and the more it gets about that you can't kick him out of the game. I want the oppo to fear us before kick off.
Stevie H Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 don't think he gets enough credit for what a good defender he is. pundits tend to focus solely on the fact that he's a ball player, but he's a damned effective stopper with it.

It just looks so effortless most of the time that it doesn't look like he's doing much. I call it the anti-Puyol effect.
DecidedByPoll Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I'd say he's got a good long way. He needs to improve his 1 on 1 defending, especially when he's tracking into the left back area. He needs to be more dominant in the air and he could improve his distribution. He's consistently forced into a reliance on forced balls down the left hand side, if he improved his right foot he would find himself with more time. FInally - he needs to really b****** players and organise, especially when Carra isnt' around. That said, he's only young, he's got a fantastic attitude and I do think he's currently a very good player who may well one day captain Liverpool.

Dont agree.... his 1 on 1 defending is excellent (assume from your comment about the left back area you are thinking about Drogba getting the cross in for Joe Coles goal last year which was one of the few times he was beaten). Also, dont agree his distribution is bad at all (certainly compared to Carra, JAR etc etc ). I agree he could be more of an organiser but that will come. He is already top class and i dont think i would swap him for anyone, taking into account his age etc.

George Costanza Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 'world class' is the s***test and most over used term in football. He's bloody good for us, I don't give two s***s about comparing him to other players.
Guest Snorky Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Q. When can we call Agger 'World Class'? A. Whenever you like, it's a forum.
CarraLegend Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Was absolutely stunned he wasn't on the young player of the year list last season while people like Aaron Lennon were but then footballers are supposedly thick as s***e so.....
Dominus Maximus Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Dont agree.... his 1 on 1 defending is excellent (assume from your comment about the left back area you are thinking about Drogba getting the cross in for Joe Coles goal last year which was one of the few times he was beaten). Held Drogba and feckin scored a goal. He still very young, he plays like an established CB, he is world class.
fyds Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Agger is ours, he is an exceptionally able and talented young player who gives his best for the cause and reportedly loves being here. That's all I care about.
hagi_complex Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 World Class? It's a bulls*** term that means nothing, cos it's completely subjective. Will any us view Agger as a better player cos some spanner like Charlie Nicholas decides that he's worth fawning over? F*ck off. No offence to the original poster, but who gives a s***? The boy is doing great for us, and he's a class act. I'm happy that he's still under the radar.

But in terms of being stronger in the right foot, i think hes pretty ok. Didnt he provide a cross for someone's goal last season? Forgot the game. I might be ignorant, but I havent seen a central defender who can ping the ball from back with either foot comfortably like alonso, they are usually stronger on one than the other.
