Guest Budo Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 "I need the speed of Torres in the last game of the season - maybe a Champions League final or to win the league." What if you've already been knocked out of the CL or have dropped too many points in earlier games to win the league!

Guest Budo Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 You know best Ah C'mon! Isn't it common sense?
CarraLegend Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 (edited) Ah C'mon! Isn't it common sense? Like he said in his interview, if Gerrard, Carragher and Torres have to play every game or we can't win then maybe we aren't ready to win the League. I think Torres should of started against Brum but Rafa and his policies have been done to death. Edited September 27, 2007 by CarraLegend

Another thread from an amauter Internet manager. Please wake me up when they've made the interweb illegal.....
ozmick Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Fact is we should have beaten Brum without Torres anyway. What if he was injured in a match and out for 10 games? Would that mean our chance of winning the PL was over? We cannot rely on one player to win the PL, if thats the case then we will never win it. Not saying that I would love to watch Torres in every game because he is a great player to watch but doing that will mean injuries and tiredness.

Please wake me up when they've made the interweb illegal..... And in what context should it be? "I don't need Torres for playing Birmingham if I have Dirk Kuyt, Andriy Voronin and Peter Crouch," he said. "I need the speed of Torres in the last game of the season - maybe a Champions League final or to win the league." "Those are the decisions of a manager," he added. "When you are playing for winning trophies you must analyse everything and say 'OK for the last 10-15 games I need Torres fit'," he said. "People are talking about players playing a lot of games now. They can do it. I don't say that they can't. "You can play 20, 25 or 30 games in a row. No problem. Everybody can do it. The problem is at the end of the season after 30-40 games. "The last 10-15 games you are playing for trophies and you must be fresh, ready and fit." I realize it's not the full interview, but I think we get the gist eh?

Granted, but if you're leaving a superior player who is fit on the bench, then it doesn't matter who you are playing does it? Would Shanks, Paisley, Kenny have left their (fully fit) best striker on the bench in an old first division match? Would fergie, Wenger?

FFS Fergie!!! ferguson have rested ronaldo and rooney on many occasions, especially in games like birmingham at home where you expect to win it anyway
Guest Lennon Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Torres can't play in every game. Accept it.

Stevie H Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 i f***ing love that statement from rafa. that's why he's the manager, and we aren't.

I think it was a load of b******s, Torres will not lose pace at the end of the season, thats not how the human body works, neither will he be influenced of being rested once in September come April. I have a degree in Sports Science, do Rafa?

Lee W Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 (edited) Fact is we should have beaten Brum without Torres anyway. The argument can be twisted both ways. Would we have beaten Reading without Torres ? We cannot rely on one player to win the PL, if thats the case then we will never win it. United relied on Rooney and Ronaldo. Chelsea relied on Lampard on Drogba. We rely on Gerrard and Torres. Common theme - talismen on the pitch to win football matches. Can't believe there's even a debate about it. Common theme - talismen on the pitch to win football matches. Can't believe there's even a debate about it.There's got to be a bloody good reason not to play Torres in the league. I can think of a few (26/12, 28/12 games - massive up-coming European Cup Quarter Final against Real) but they've got to be good. I couldn't care less if he doesn't kick a ball in domestic cup competitions. No one thinks he should play every game and it's very disingenous to argue against that.

Common theme - talismen on the pitch to win football matches. All those players are rested for league games at some point in the season, usually against weaker sides at home and brought on if they are needed to change the game, much like Torres against Brum. As someone has already said, If we need Torres to beat Brum then our squad isn't good enough to win the league.

As someone has already said, If we need Torres to beat Brum then our squad isn't good enough to win the league.Games have contexts - had we won eight on the bounce, were five points clear, it's mid-February and Kuyt's on fire then a rest makes more sense. Two poor performances was the context, the loss of momentum was the context, a crowd who are falling in love was the context. United won the league with momentum last season - that was their prized commodity. They grew in belief in the inevitability of their cause as it wore on. They also had some very experienced campaigners who know what it is to win the league, who know it can be done. We simply aren't at that point in any way yet.
Guest Kaizer Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 For me Torres has got the qualities we need to unlock teams that sit deep with the intentions only to defend, he can create something of his own with a magical moment of brilliance when hard team work wont get us anywhere. Birmingham was such a team and on top of that we have a bad record against them, so to not play this one player we got in during the summer to help us get the results needed under these circumstances, when a moment of magic is whats needed, well I think it was a huge mistake. Torres played 30 minutes after all and in those 30 minutes things started to happen, for me it was one of the worst games to actually rest him because we should know Birmingham came to Anfield with no real intentions to attack, it would be much wiser to rest him in a game that would be more open, at least thats my look at it.

I'm convinced Rafa is focusing on the physical aspects too much. If you're a striker and scoring goals and the old confidence is up, you just want to play. The fact that even the very best defenders are/will be s*** scared of the kid in question is almost secondary. There's a real party-line being followed here by some.....
