Will not signing a CB really hurt us?

I was fearful that not signing a CB in the summer would hurt us. What with Agger being out for a while, Carra making a heroic return from a nasty injury, and Sami doing well but looking woefully slow, do you really regret us not closing the deal on Heinze?

 

I wasn't that eager to sign Heinze but I really thought we should sign a good CB (as some of you well know). I really think that not signing someone this summer will hurt us. If Carra's rib gets whacked again, we are well and truly in trouble after what has been a brilliant start.

That's why opinions are important. If there are enough of them (in the context of running the club), and they are in unison, then things get done.

I thought/think we've too little depth at left-back and centre-back. We should have pursued options other than Heinze. Hopefully we'll get away with it. Arbeloa's form, so far, has been a massive blessing...

Probably should have said quality rather than depth. I didn't, however, expect Arbeloa to be as good as he has been so far. I like Riise, but think we need a better first-choice left-back...

what do you all think about lobbing Sissoko into the back 4? or is that a recipe for more penalties and an early bath for Momo?

I don't think we need to worry. Both Agger and Carra will be better later on the season and Hyppia will be happy having played more. we may even see if any of the young lads can step up and save us a purchase.

You can't just 'should have' and then reel off some big names - it doesn't work like that. We had our priorities and we went with them. So far we have conceded no goals from open play etc. Dagger will be back soon enough, meanwhile Sami, Carra, Arbeloa (played CB in Spain) will cope reasonably well. You can't legislate for everything, and we do have two players for each position and more for this kind of situation.

 

We couldn't get Heinze because United blocked it - no lack of will or unity on our part. Chielini got a pay hike and stayed and Chivu is unlikely to be Rafa's type of CB - he's also not much quiker than Sami.

I think Hobbs is the only realistic candidate from the reserves as the other players who have been here for a while such as Antwi, Roque, O'Donnell and Paletta are either on loan or have left. The new guys such as Huth, San Jose etc are probably still a bit inexperienced to risk in the first team.
