Leo No.8 Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 ...as a summer target of ours would people like to see us renew our interest either next summer or in January after what they saw last night? Personally I thought he showed himself to be largely what I thought of him anyway - outrageously talented and very dangerous at times but sometimes wasteful and makes the wrong choice. What I would say about his performance last night was that he gave absolutely everything - which was a bit question mark I had about him. Fair play to him on that front, because he ran both wings hard and if not for his defensive intervention right at the end we'd actually have won that game last night; I don't think he'd have been there earlier in his career. Everyone knows he's a good player, but I'd like to see us go after him again based on the fact that he has the ability and seems to have realised he does actually need to work as well as show off, not the fact that he backed into Finnan lobbed the ball up in the air which was utterly pointless but had Tyldelsley in raptures. One player I was hugely impressed with last night was Lucho Gonzalez, thought he ran the show for them in midfield. Good thing Everton didn't get him in the summer he'd have made a huge difference to them.
Stevie H Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 he's a f***ing ponce and wants his legs breaking.
beejay Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 he's a f***ing ponce and wants his legs breaking. Like Ronaldo?
Rimbeux Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Big audition from him. Main damage was in getting our players booked for dsiving in on him and getting lots of free kicks which he proceeded to deliver erratically. We doubled on him most of the time so probably contributed to him only going in behind two or three times in spite of all the ball he recieved, mainly in non threatening areas, and not delivering much service of real threat or direction. Talent, work-rate (at least last night), but not great decision making or off the ball movement...
Phil M (ET Crew) Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 No doubting the lad has skill, and he showed plenty of that last night, but for me was a highlights reel performance. Plenty of the fancy stuff, some good work rate but for all that effort little end product of note. I am still undecided as to whether I would like him at Anfield, although after Pennants performance and sending off last night I guess there will be quite some momentum on the forums wanting Quaresma in place of JP.
honourablegeorge Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 (edited) That's pretty much the question, isn't it - would you prefer Quaresma to Pennant? Quaresma's a threat every time he gets the ball - he can cross, he can shoot, he can go past people. Pennant often gets a good cross in, but rarely goes past people, and rarely shoots, never mind score. It's a no brainer. Edited September 19, 2007 by honourablegeorge
Ronnie Whelan Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 We got to see plenty of him cos he took every single set piece, the majority of which were wasted. I think we have a similar player in Babel, both very talented with a lot to learn.

Not as a wide player maybe, but he'll eclipse him once he's learnt a bit more about football, where to be, where to run etc Edited September 19, 2007 by Rimbeux

What were those outside of the right boot things all about? The most impressive thing for me was when he got back to cut out the chance for Kuyt.
honourablegeorge Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I think we have a similar player in Babel, both very talented with a lot to learn. Aye - but we need four strikers, four or five central mids, four full backs - surely we have room for at least two quality wide players?
johngibo YPC Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I was impressed by his work rate, didn't think he would put that much in. Not sure if he always does that, but if he does fair play to him.But how many set pieces did they have? 9 corners? loads of free kicks as well. He took them all, and can anyone remember one that had us in trouble? I never thought once 'thats a great delivery', despite the fact that the commentators were wetting themselves over him before every one. On about 84 minutes he decided to take one with the outside of his boot that didn't even reach the penalty area. The Main Stand would have loved that one!!!And that flick was f***ing pointlessAnd he's an absolute c***!I think the comparison with Babel is interesting. Problem for Quaresma is he is 24! he shouldn't be that raw any moreI'll pass
matty Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 He was certainly involved a lot, although we were so poor last night I think Kilbane would have looked like one of Europe's best. And he's a diving whinging c*nt.
Gomez Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 he can't cross on the basis of last night's performance. What were those outside of the right boot things all about? I agree, wasn't that impressed with him after all hype on here, too much time on his a***, no end product and didn't look like he would last five mins against the likes of everton or bolton.
fred milne Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I think the comparison with Babel is interesting. Problem for Quaresma is he is 24! he shouldn't be that raw any more.Babel looks much more raw, though. More raw than I would expect, based on what we reportedly paid for him.
johngibo YPC Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Babel looks much more raw, though. More raw than I would expect, based on what we reportedly paid for him. yes he doesBut i hope we are not still talking about potential when he is 24, thats all
Ronnie Whelan Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I dont think we will be still talking potential when Babel is 24, but that is still what you are looking at with Quaresma.
Swagger Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Personally I thought he showed himself to be largely what I thought of him anyway - outrageously talented and very dangerous at times but sometimes wasteful and makes the wrong choice. I think that sums him up pretty well. And, as you say Leo, he wasn't afraid to work hard, something I am sure Rafa took note of. I still like him, and if we have the funds, I hope Rafa goes for him. When he is on top of his game he is unstoppable, and its hard to resist players who can so effortlessly create something out of nothing.
JohnnyH Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Quaresma's career will be over by the time he's 26 as he'll have worn away the outside of his right foot.
Guest Kaizer Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 We got to see plenty of him cos he took every single set piece, the majority of which were wasted. I think we have a similar player in Babel, both very talented with a lot to learn. I think his delivery was good, but remember that we have one of the best defenses in the world. Quaresma is head and shouldrs above Babel, to me Babel looks lost out wide, he has only showed glimpses of quality when he has been in a central position in and around the box, I dont expect anything from him playing as a winger.

growler Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 don't think we have any right to complain about freekicks.
johngibo YPC Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 don't think we have any right to complain about freekicks. we did score off one
CarraLegend Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 He's nice to watch running with the ball but other than that his crossing and shooting were rubbish. He either hit crosses straight at Reina or out on the other side, only time we got done last night was by Sektioui and Lucho for the goal. Quaresma did work hard though.
Leo No.8 Posted September 19, 2007 Author Posted September 19, 2007 we did score off one Which was taken initially by Finnan incidentally. Just because he's only our low-key, dependable right-back shouldn't mean he isn't given the chance to take corners and even set-pieces round the box, which the likes of Alonso, Gerrard and Riise are shockingly wasteful with. If my life depended on someone in our team crossing the ball accurately to me I'd pick Finnan without a moment's hesitation.
