Guest Snorky Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Pick a Liverpool squad for an imaginary tournament. The squad must consist of 22 players and can be from any country and any era. Guest Kaizer Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 I was putting together a squad, but then I started thinking about how much football has improved during the different decades when it comes to pace, stamina, strength, tactics and technique etc. If you had a time machine and brought the England World Champions from -66 to Germany in 2006 I think they would get hammered in all their matches so I just gave up.

Earl Hafler Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Good f**king grief ( Not you, Knox )Bobby Charlton, Beckenbauer, Bobby Moore. Alas, they played in comic strips and with jumpers for goalposts.
Elisha_Scott Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 No Sami Hyypia yet? He would definitely be in mine, if I could be arsed thinking.

Something to build a team around. But it's too difficult to pick individual players, it would be easier to pick 'defence from the late 70's' - 'current midfield' - '80's attack'. There are load of players I haven't seen enough of. Ron Yeats, for instance, is on most teams listed so far, but I couldn't pick him without giving him a trial...

Or considering that the great players of the past, nurtured with modern coaching and aided by brilliant medical staff, might be able to play a pass or two. Yeah, Dixie Dean's season record was aided by teams using the Ardillesesque 2-3-5 tactics but they were good player. I know of a man who's been watching football for 50 years and still thinks Duncan Edwards was the best he ever saw and, though i've never seen him play, i'd be surprised if Billy Liddell wouldn't be able to tear modern defences apart. One could apply thinking like Kaizer's to horse racing but not one horse has come close to Arkle in 40 years. Edited September 18, 2007 by Big Stuff

cymrococh Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I love all these people picking Ron Yeats and Alec Lindsay, I assume they've seen them enough times to base that judgement on.

Perhaps, I might trade Alan Kennedy for Emlyn Hughes. Just think of the players that don't make the cut, though: Ian St John, Tommy Smith, Phil Thompson, Ronnie Whelan, Peter Beardsley, Robbie Fowler, Sami Hyypia etc.
