Broadband supplier

My broadband supplier at the moment is Virgin, and the connection can be very slow at times. I was saying to a mate that I am thinking of changing to Sky broadband but he warned me off, saying their customer service is rubbish and their connection no way near as quick as they advertise. Is he talking out of his ar$e? Are there any other providers worth checking out?
