JohnnyH Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Glad that it's a minutes applause so 1 or 2 numpties can't spoil it.

Huyton_Red Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Nice gesture From reading various everton and liverpool boards it seems to have gone down well with everyone I hope it is the starting point in a thawing of relations with everton, it has gone a bit 'manc' between us the last few years, with the atmosphere at derbies getting worse and worse and the fans acting like idiots towards people from their own city. I hope this will be the start of everyone getting a grip and getting back to what it always used to be like in derbies, rivalry yes, hatred no, leave that to the mancs and the rest of the nob eds
johngibo YPC Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 (edited) I agree Huyton. Whilst loads of boss lads who i know support Everton i will never hate them. Laugh my a*** off at them yes, but not hate. And slightly off topic but, "Z Cars - a tune which lets Kopites know you're in the home of the enemy and you're not welcome there."What? its the least threatening song in the world?? Well said, lads, good points. As for using Z Cars, I think it's brillant. This isn't a time for rivalries, it's about solidarity.
Kite Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Think it's a squirmingly naff idea myself - a minute's silence would have shown dutiful respect, playing another team's "tune" is taking a tragedy and dragging it down to the level of a football match. Next up, Elton John sings the tune of Z cars no doubt.

I'm not sure about the z cars bit - i could never imagine YNWA being played at Goodison but maybe that is the point. This has been a senseless tragedy which has affected the whole city - not just the blues. What is wrong with a bit of unity to say that we all believ it is wrong to gun down an innocent boy? There is a minute's silence these days at the drop of a hat - this tribute is something different and unique to Merseyside.

Also, Rhys's parents are happy with the tribute, and really thats all that matters. Apparently they will be at the game tonight too.

I'll gladly observe whatever tribute is decided upon, but I think it is a sorry state of affairs if the reason why a minute's applause has become popular is because people are no longer capable of observing a minute's silence. In this instance, I presume it is what his parents wanted because it was done that way at Goodison too so like I said, so I've no problem with it. I wouldn't like to necessarily see it become the norm for every occasion just because it is an easy way of drowning out the knobheads, but that is something to think about at another time maybe.

I think applause is fitting for someone so young. It just seems more appropriate than silence. Agree with your last point as well
magneto Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 (edited) Have to say, I was a little uncomfortable with the site of them making an appearance 3 days after their son was killed at Goodison park. Great gesture though. Edited August 28, 2007 by magneto

MikeK88 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 I tend to find a minutes applause more, can't think of the word - sort of moving, than a minutes silence. Ok, maybe the idea did come from some t***s in the crowd not obeying a minutes silence, but a minutes applause generally makes the the hair on my arms and neck stand up more than a minutes silence. You're appreciating a life, not mourning a life. Which is what some people want. I'm pretty sure Liverpool as a city could hold a minutes silence, however as this is an 11 year old boy it is more fitting to appreciate his life, rather than mourn it. As for the Z Cars, if it gives the family support then I'm all for it.

The kid supported Everton but the primary thing is that it was a f***ing kid that died, being an Everton supporter is totally tangential. It deserves remorse, not a theme mostly associated with team rivalry and the pomp of pre-match expectations. The fact that we are apparently now afraid of ever holding a minute's silence, especially in a case like this, is pathetic and fairly shocking really.

Guest efcrmagic Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 It's not going to make us all best friends and go the derby hand in hand, hell, it'll be back to normal by the weekend but it's a nice mark of respect I'll admit from the club, I can't argue with that. A warm well done to yers.
Guest Linton Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 How about a two minute applause tonight? One for Antonio Puerta as well? I'm sure some of our players is a bit affected by his death? Some of them will probably know him.

The lad's parents are happy with the tribute, as far as I'm concerned that is all that matters. Regarding a minutes silence, I reckon applause is more appropriate to celebrate the life of a little kid, and again, that is what the parent's want. Also, AFAIK, minutes silences at Anfield have always been impeccably observed by our fans.
