I can't really understand why Martin Jol gets so much respect in the media and Rafa gets criticised.

If you look at what they have achieved at their current clubs and their previous clubs it doesn't make sense

Can someone explain it to me please?

The only thing i can think of is that the papers love Jol because he buys lots of English players

Scans very nicely with Verdi's Anvil Chorus.

Only if you miss two beats and a bar! :D

The media criticize Rafa and his rotation/zonal marking/untested signings etc, because he's spanish and the manager of a club that is THE now rousing giant of English football and not based in London or run by a pissed scot. They are generally more praiseworthy of Jol because if they were not, he would rip off thier arms and suck the jelly from their eyes. They do wonder why he hasn't signed Heskey yet though.

I thought Jol was really good. Not better than Rafa, but good.

I may be very wrong about that.

He's better than any English manager I can think of - which is the epitomy of damning with faint praise.

he is destined to take over from van basten as the dutch national coach next summer so this is likely to be his last season with spurs anyway

I'd have Allardyce ahead of Jol. I'd rather go for a pint with the latter though.

Allardcyce's football is painfully boring. Jol's isn't. And he has been good for Spurs. I agree with the beer though.

He's an average to poor manager. He has little say in transfers as Spurs are run in a typical European style with a sporting director (Damien Commoli) running things behind the scene mean Jol is more of a head coach than a manager in the English sense of the word. If we had someone over Rafa like Comolli is at Spurs, I think Rafa would quit, or at least be very pissed off.

Spurs have spent the biggest amount behind Chelsea since Jol's been in charge, getting them successive 5th places is hardly an achievement, especially when you compare the relative success Moyes has has at Everton with tight a*** Kenwright in charge.

to be fair to Jol spurs have always been big spenders, but he got them into their highest league position in donkey's years for two seasons
