floyd the barber Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 thought he got skinned 2nd half...first time ive seen that in...ummm well cant remember the last time, with arbeloa doing a quality job at left bk and likely to stay there if we dont get a new left bk in...........is it time for Rafa to possibly bring in a stop-gap squadie to "challenge" finnan....we all know who ever takes on the battle shall lose...Hello Josemi, hello krompkamp... Finnan seems to be a player that thrives on competition and suffers when hes the last man standing for the position.... OR will rafa blood the thrilling youngster Insua slowly over the season with Arbeloa being the man to challenge finnan?....Either way...................we need another full back and Rafa obviously knows it, lets hope he can bring someone in before the deadline....be it Heinze or whoever, its definetly a slight weakness for us.......and im talking competition for places.

Think you answered your own question there. Occasionally attackers will get the better of defenders - it happens. Arbeloa is primarily a right back so he will also provide competition for Finnan this season. We've plenty of competition for places in the fullback positions - we should only bring in someone if they're potentially better than Finnan or Riise - no more options, please.
Stevie H Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 steve finnan is arguably the best rightback in europe and yes he got skinned by quick as f*** ashley young today but he won't be the last. i've never seen a winger owni finnan, he's the b******s. so shut up.
floyd the barber Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 errrrrrrrr im actually one of finnans biggest fans and wouldnt swap him for anyone, including alves......just saying hes a player that seems to thrive on competition.

Arbeloa is not primarily a full back! He is primarily a center back, who played occasionally on the right in Spain...
Cooldude Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Give some credit to Ashley Young, was very very good. Finnan is the least of our worries, he'll be absolutely fine
Woodsyla Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 errrrrrrrr im actually one of finnans biggest fans and wouldnt swap him for anyone, including alves......just saying hes a player that seems to thrive on competition. He has Arbeloa (who by the way looked great today) for competition. Ashley Young is some player he will skin many many right backs this season.
Benitez Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Finnan will be just fine, no one is perfect, but he's been near perfect for 2 and a half seasons! He'll be first choice right back for a good while yet. The way Arbeloa plays at left back, I'd be more than happy to see JAR being the one getting a run for him money competition wise! Cos he needs it more than Finnan does. Impressed with Arbeloa, he's fitted in nicely in this team with little fuss.
bazz Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 ffs 1st game in - people looking for someone to get at. We won ffs, enjoy it, instead of looking for a negative moment for our most consistent performer.

I thought it was the other way around. Rafa signed him to play as a fullback and to provide competition for Finnan. He's played most of his games for us as a fullback hasn't he?

He's played most of his games for us as a fullback hasn't he? he was a central defender originally, thats the position he played for Castilla and when he went to Depor. But ended up playing full back. But I agree with yer - that he was signed primerally as a fullback, but it's kinda handy to have a defender that can play all along the back four!

_00_deathscar Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Didn't Agger play left back once last season or did I just dream that? but it's kinda handy to have a defender that can play all along the back four! Aye, and play well!
Maldini Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 No he played left side of a 3 but it took the commentators 45 minutes to notice, they then said we'd changed formation at half-time.
RedHarvest Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 ffs 1st game in - people looking for someone to get at. We won ffs, enjoy it, instead of looking for a negative moment for our most consistent performer.Yeah! get on Pennants back like everyone else

Aye, but I seem to remember him pushing up a lot though, as if he were a full back - was it against Fulham?
