FOOTBALL

Liverpool face a trial by furnace to claim their place in the Champions League proper.

Rafa Benitez (above) and his men will have to play their qualifying round first leg at Toulouse next week in the blazing heat of the afternoon.

Liverpool had assumed they would begin their European bid with a normal evening kick-off. But there is a full French domestic programme scheduled for Wednesday, forcing the game to be switched for TV purposes.

AdvertisementAnd Toulouse last night announced that the match in the Stade Municipal will now start at 4.30pm local time - when temperatures could be at their height.

A Toulouse source said: "It looks like the air temperature will be in the mid-30s, but it will be even hotter inside the stadium because it is a bowl and keeps the heat in.

"It is not ideal for the Toulouse players, but at least they are used to this sort of heat and will have an advantage over Liverpool. It could make things very interesting."

I thought the TV deals were struck with UEFA - and so they would have a say in this? - no info regarding that belief, mind.

I believe the qualifiers don't count in this, hence the fact the home match will be licking off at 20.05 rather than 19.45.

I`m not sure how this works, but what happened when Rosenborg played Astana from Kasakhstan in the second round qualifier tells me there is not much that can be done.

Astana asked to change the game in Trondheim from its usual kick off time at 19.45 , to something around 14.45 (not 100% sure) because of the different time zones at 19.45 its the middle of the night in Kazakhstan, TV3 the broadcaster with the rights in Scandinavia denied the request together with Rosenborg and it ended up with Astana not broadcasting from the first leg at home at all as some kind of revenge.

There were nothing Rosenborg or TV3 could do about it so I think there are individual rights in the qualifiers not being affected by the original TV deal.

play as many of the coloured lads as possible, they don't like playing in winter much, but they'll run all day for you with a big smile on their faces, in warm weather.

got to watch their temperament, especially if they go a goal behind.

I watched highlights of the Valenciennes vs Toulouse game this morning at some silly oclock time on Channel 5. Toulouse were dreadful and their defence was even worse than dreadful.

'The black players at this club lend the side a lot of skill and flair, but you also need white players in there to balance things up and give the team some brains and some common sense.' (Crystal Palace chairman Ron Noades, speaking in 1991).
