Guest sniffer Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Just been leafing through Gascoigne's biog shown to me by a friend. In it, talking about 1988, he said he was up for leaving the Geordies and was looking for Liverpool to come in for him. Seems he wanted to play for the Reds for quite a while. It never came about, however, and he was told that was because we never had the money. So he went to Spurs! Shurley shome mishtake?!
Guest Snorky Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 He was that close to signing. He only went to Spurs 'cos he was pissed off that Liverpool asked him to wait another year. Liverpool only had the money to buy Ian Rush.

In the summer of 1988, we were in for Gazza big time as Kenny was a big admirer. They would speak regularly. Howver, we spend £2.8 million on bringing Rushie back from Juventus and the budget was gone. Except or £40,000 on one Nicky Tanner

Didn't we buy Rush back at a lower price than we sold him, by the way?

Didn't we buy Rush back at a lower price than we sold him, by the way? It's gen mate, I used to spend a lot of free time in Newcastle during the middle and late 80's. Got to know a few lads, one of them was pretty close to Gazza, he even spent Xmas Eve with him most years. It was him who told me. Gazza was desperate to join us. He went to Spurs because he had burnt a lot of bridges in Newcastle thinking he was off to Liverpool.
pipnasty Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Yes, but you also have to take into account drop in revenue due to the Euro ban. And the fact that we had originally used the Rush money to help fund the likes of Barnes, Houghton, Beardsley and, erm, Tanner.
RaoulD Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 It is worth remembering that we are talking about a time when football was not seen as a profitable business and the amount of money in the game was minimal when compared to the position now. TV revenues were nothing special and the clubs were not really being run as commercial enterprises. No club was able to simply go out and buy whoever they wished without balancing their budgets and no club had a budget which stood out from their rivals. We had spent the money we got for Rush on Barnes and Beardsley so it is hardly surprising that we could not afford Gazza when the opportunity to re-purchase Rush arose in 1988.
floyd Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 (edited) Gascoigne's first choice was Liverpool but with no offer forthcoming, Gascoigne promised Alex Ferguson that he would sign for Manchester United. Ferguson duly went on holiday only to find out that Gascoigne had signed for Spurs, who paid Newcastle a fee of £2.3 million which was then a British transfer record. Also, Spurs in 1988 spent some serious money back thenGazza - £2.2mPaul Stewart - £1.7mWalshy - £0.5mNayim - £0.4mErik Thorstvedt - £0.4mBobby Mimms - £0.4m Edited July 22, 2007 by floyd

Didn't we buy Rush back at a lower price than we sold him, by the way?YesRush was sold for £3.2 million and brought back for £2.8 million. As mentioned, the cash received in Summer of 87 was used for Barnes, Beardsley and Houghton. In 1987, it was muted that to keep Rush they wold have to put up entrance by about 1.50 a man. They may not sound a lot now but in them days, it was about 3.50 in the Kop
Swipe Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Read an interview him years later, when he said he wanted to go to Liverpool but Roy Evans was happy with Redknapp and Barnes in the middle and didn't want to break the partnership up. Can't remember if it was when he moved to Rangers or Boro. Probably Boro. Was past his best then anyway. But would have been some signing if we'd taken him from Newcastle.

Gazza, Beardsley and Barnes ?! Defenders would have been retiring en mass.
LondonRed Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Gazza, Beardsley and Barnes ?! Defenders would have been retiring en mass. 2 geordies and a jamaican..sounds like destructive partnership though!
matty Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I well remember taking a radio into college the day it was expected to get an announcement about Gascoigne joining us. gutted it didn't happen at the time. would have been good.
Leo No.8 Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Gazza would have been brilliant for us, and less likely to have gone off the rails because of the type of club we are. Shame it never happened...
Cobs Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Gazza would have been brilliant for us, and less likely to have gone off the rails because of the type of club we are. Shame it never happened... Gazza was going to go off the rails regardless of where he was because of the type of person he is, i.e. bipolar, alcoholic, depressive, OCD sufferer.... et al. Great player though, would love to have seen him with us for a few years.
PaulLFC Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 they say Geniuses live on the edge of insanity, likely my favorite player ever.
boohog Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 I miss the days when fat geordie comedian lunatics could be the best players on the face of the earth. Football is boring now.
