Behind Enemy Lines Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/12072007/1/m...g-spenders.htmlEverton boss David Moyes has hit out at the "irresponsible" attitude of some Premier League clubs during this summer's transfer window.Moyes sealed a £4million move for Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United last week and is keen to add more players to his squad, but admits he is struggling to compete with some of the top flight's big spenders. The likes of Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Fulham and West Ham have splashed millions of pounds on new players this summer and Moyes fears inflated prices could have negative consequences for the game. He told Everton's official website: "I think there has been some irresponsible buying and spending by some clubs and it makes it a bit more difficult if you've got less money to spend than that." He added: "We'd like to add to the squad and I know the supporters are desperate to see new faces coming in, no more so than me, but things out there in the market are tight. "But we are certainly doing everything we can to strengthen the squad and give ourselves a chance. We've done it that way for the past few years and we'll continue to do so. "I've been a supporter, in fact I still am a supporter, but we're always quite cagey here and we don't give too much away partly because people know that we don't have the funds to compete at the top end."
Bailo Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Irresponsible?! "You really shouldn't be spending that much" "Why?" "Because I can't and it's not fair" Bitter t***
MikeD Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 we don't have the funds to compete at the top end if you keep shopping in the championship, you will end up there.....
Benitez Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 maybe the real reason he hasn't got much to spend, is cos of Moyes' irresponsible transfer dealings in recent years He's not exactly had to scrape the pennies together since being there.
smithdown Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 I bet he'd refuse any offers of £5m plus for James Beattie too. He'd go "oh no, thats irresponsible that is. I've been a supporter, in fact I still am a supporter...just take him away for feck all", just like he did when he sold Koldrup.
R A Softlad Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 maybe the real reason he hasn't got much to spend, is cos of Moyes' irresponsible transfer dealings in recent years He's not exactly had to scrape the pennies together since being there. Is true and he's had a fair bit of money in too from sales of his good players.
ManxRed Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Blah blah blah blah blah I blame Liverpool blah blah blah blah... Change the fecking record...
Stevie H Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Is true and he's had a fair bit of money in too from sales of his good players. aye. perhaps it was irresponsible of him to accept £28m for rooney.
Behind Enemy Lines Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 aye. perhaps it was irresponsible of him to accept £28m for rooney. I forgot aboput this durring the season & the 'he can't play for you' episode - but Evertons fee for the granny sh@ger is linked to United sucess on the pitch. They actually agreed a lower fee overall but with more money up front cos they were so skint at the time. (not that they are flush now ofcourse - but not quite as skint & in the brown smelly stuff as they where then) I have a feeling that they 'only' got £20m for him.
floyd Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 How many Evertonians does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they just sit in the dark and blame Liverpool
Guz Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Dont see much wrong in what he says. The market has gone crazy and mediocre players are being bought/sold for high fees e.g. Kamara which makes it even harder for small clubs like Everton to compete. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Benitez Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Mind you, Moyes has splashed a fair bit on some mediocre players as well, so it's a bit pot and kettle innit. The market is indeed crazy though, that's for sure.
stressederic Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Considering that Moyes spunked cash on Beattie, Van Der Meyde and that defender that they couldn't afford to play because of the contract agreement, perhaps he's not the best person to lecture others on fiscal responsibility.
Spike Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 My bluenose mate at work was scoffing at us paying £11m for Babel saying how much it heightened expectation and that Rafa will be out on his ear by Christmas. I just smiled at him and said 'well, it's a sellers market, just a shame your a below basement level club'.
Tosh Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 If Everton are struggling to compete on transfers with Fulham..... However, perhaps it's a Bascombe-esque bluff. Just so clubs don't raise their prices too high when Everton come knocking FWIW, I think £6m for Nugent is a decent bit of business.
Leo No.8 Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Signing Per Kroldrup for £5m then selling him for f*ck all shortly after - now thats irresponsible...
jon_hall Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 In todays Echo has complained that the likes of Nugent at £6m is well overpriced. How much did he pay for Beattie again?
R A Softlad Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Desperate words by a muppet, he's effectively saying here comes our bi-annual battle for relegation.
allez les rouges Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 i read an echo article yesterday. it was the blue f*****s youth manager. he was talking about how hard it is to unearth youngsters. Fair enough i thought. then he said " we have one of the worlds biggest football clubs in the world on our doorstep...... Manchester united..............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" hahaha you f***ing sad bitter b******s.
San Diego Red Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 (edited) "It's not easy for small clubs to compete." "No s***, genius" Edited July 14, 2007 by KPatel
