anfield Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 With the impending departures of Bellamy and Gonzalez. Rafa has once again showed his ruthless streak, in that sense, he is the opposite of GH who persisted on and on with players in the hope they would come good. However, I would like to see new players given more than one season to prove themselves to the team especially the likes of Gonzalez. Quite a few players have looked poor in their first season and then blossomed. Granted from the looks of things, they didnt perform very well but I still think we should give players a more than one season......
Maldini Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Possibly, but we're getting to the stage where we won't get a chance to give players a chance to bed themselves in because we need to win every week.
anfield Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 Then whats the point of buying so many youngsters?
Guest Snorky Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 We only see what happens on the park, and if that is poor then it's probably poor in training as well. I like the way Rafa is ruthless, if you can't cut it then sod off. At least this proves he can admit errors freely and not stick with players just because he bought them.
Sion Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) I'm all for giving a player time if I think he could turn his performances around, but with the likes of Bellamy, Gonzalez, Cisse - I - and obv Rafa - can't see it happening. Edited July 7, 2007 by Sion
Maldini Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Then whats the point of buying so many youngsters? Because the youngsters might get a chance here and there and prove themselves instantly, Gonzalez had a year and always looked like a rabbit in the headlights.
americanscouser Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 the youngsters are making up our new look reserve team. they serve a two fold purpose. first, we bring them in pretty cheap and if we don't think they are going to cut it, we sell them off at a small profit. if you sell of 10 players at a profit of say 250k, you can help fund future signings.2nd, we hope that maybe 2-3 make the grade, say a hobbs, guthrie or anderson and finally break their way into the first team. they are given chances based on how they train, how they play in the reserves and finally how they perform in the carling cup. i think rafa has done a great job with the youngsters so far, even if he's bought like 10 keepers and 20 centre backs....

Of all the players Rafa has decided to let go I have only been somewhat surprised with 2: 1. Kromkamp- I however have reached the conclusion that it was all premeditated and the only way of not losing all the money spent on Josemi. 2. Gonzalez- After all the wait I thought he'd have been given more time but as Kev says we do not know what happens in training. Gonzalez may not have settled in the UK at all. All the others were sold at the right time IMO: Josemi, Nunez, Morientes, Cisse, Bellamy, Baros etc.
Rimbeux Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Bellamy was probably never good enough, certainly not as a rotated player, and looks more and more like opportunism and circumstance. Gonzo hasn't looked up to it, it's not even been one good game in four, he's been struggling to get near a decent half. We need to be winning every game, it's a tough level for players and if they're not up to it they have to go. Class, as in Agger and Masch, will show quite quickly.

Why don't you bring this up when a player we've sold has hit the heights after leaving Anfield.
Billy Dane Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 I think it shows Rafa is ruthless, a good quality IMO. A bit surprised Gonzales has not been given a bit more time, but Rafa is dictating the standards required of a first team player and all power to him.
