Guest prophet Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 While i am awfully excited about F Torres signing, i am also a bit concerned, not with the striker but the justification of succeess with relation to the amount that we are paying for him. Thats 26.5 BIG ONES... Looking at stats of Spanish strikers adapting to the EPL, its been poor so far. The likes of Luque, Morientes, etc has been very poor but looked great in their own La Liga. Another point which is closer to Pool is when was the last successful signing of a fee record breaking striker that we had. Was it Rushies second spell? i hope that Fernando T makes it as a legend here.

Dominus Maximus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 None of the Spanish strikers here were at the same level Torres is. There are only a handfull A-Class strikers and they can play in any league. Torres is one of them.
anfield Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 If we don't change our playing style, it doesnt matter who we buy, they will have a hard time scoring goals. All the criticism of Crouch and Kuyt is frankly unfair because many times they either play upfront with zero support from the midfield, no one to pass to and no one drawing defenders away.....either that or they have to drop deep to get the ball. Enough of this BS of playing two defensive midfielders........then we will have some successful strikers.
Dominus Maximus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Or play a striker who can create a scoring chance from nothing. Kuyt, Crouch nor Bellamy have the pace and the skill to do it. Torres can.
anfield Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Or easier yet tell our midfield to push up a little. There is a reason Manure has the ability to make any striker (read Saha) look good. The solution to this problem isn't to spend 26 million on striker (Im not complaining), its to add speed and creativity to the midfield.

Dule Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I was certain that Cisse was going to score here, i was certain that Kuyt was going to score here. Now i am not certain of anything. Lets just give the guy a chance, try not to put anymore pressure on him than the price he has will give already. Just need to be patient, and let THE BOY mature and develop. There has never been a signing of this caliber for this club, and its a bit of a concern when i think about the reaction some silly fans may have to it all.
Guest prophet Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 While i agree with the written comments above, why would Rafa spend that much if he knows we aint gonna get those goals from him? We might as well have spend 10mil on Milito and probable get the same effect. Having written this, you never know what Rafas thinking anyway! If any thing is to go by with Gerrad, Masch, Xabi and Momo as the core midflrs....i dread to think the formation and attack strategies that rafa will formulate to make FULL use of Fernando T.i hope the winger signing comes soon to balance out the midfld equations OR Rafa thinks Harry is good enough? Questions questions questions.........bring on the season! Do u people think we should use normal adage of "needs time to adapt" for a 26 mil striker?
Zoob Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Do u people think we should use normal adage of "needs time to adapt" for a 26 mil striker? I think we're gonna start getting pissed with people talking about Torres costing 26 million, when in reality it seems like it was actually 20. seeing as he 'only' cost 20 million does that mean he'll need more or less time to adapt?
anfield Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 There's no doubt torres will do better than Kuyt and co.....he's just in a different class. I'm just saying we could make it easier him by not parking the midfield in front of our defence......

Cisse and Kuyt have scored goals for us (particularly Cisse). Kuyts prem total from starts, was very respectable last season.
Rimbeux Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 There's no real precedent to follow, there isn't a serious number of player to compare him to, certainly not enough to be scientific, he is his own, as is often the case in these 'in our league' arguments.
Gomez Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Another point which is closer to Pool is when was the last successful signing of a fee record breaking striker that we had. Was it Rushies second spell? Not just record breaking ones, of all the 'big money' strikers:CrouchKuytDioufCisseMorientesHeskeyCollymoreCloughSaunders How many have lived up to or exceeded expectations? I'd say only Crouch (it's too early to judge Kuyt, though I am fan) Basically, our record sucks ass when buying strikers. Hopefully we are due a good one soon.

Luque was never even given a chance, I dunno what happened there, maybe he could have made it if he'd had more than a few games. Mind, he wasn't exactly the most commited of players.
