Paying a stranger by cheque

Paying by cheque is something I used to do fairly often in the UK a few years ago, but it seems to be pretty rare these days with credit and debit card payments as well as things like PayPal being much more common.

 

But now someone's asked me to send them a cheque in the post - something I wouldn't have given much thought to a few years ago TBH, but now seems to be slightly suspicious.

 

Is there anything a bit dodgy about paying in this way - especially as the cheque-receiver gets your bank details (sort code and account number) because they are printed on the cheque? Is there any potential for fraud I should be worried about there?
