Cancelling an O2 contract

My contract with o2 is due to expire some time in June. I called them to find out the exact date so that I can start a new contract with someone else. They didn't know, but said that if I want to cancel I'd have to call them on another number and write in to them giving 30 days notice. Is there a quicker way of ending my contract? I've never had to write in to end a contract before, I've just called up for my pac number and that's been it.
