In the Echo

PHIL NEAL has emerged as a surprise candidate to fill a key role at Liverpool?s Academy following the departure of Steve Heighway.

The most decorated player in Anfield history is being considered as an option as part of a number of appointments to replace the former Academy director, who retired following this year?s FA Youth Cup win.

Neal would act as a figurehead at The Academy, with additional coaching expertise also joining the club to oversee matters on the training pitch.

Manager Rafa Benitez has been assessing a variety of hopefuls since Heighway stepped down. New owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks agreed the Spanish boss must be part of the interview process.

Former midfielder Gary McAllister has also been linked with the post, but it?s understood he favours a return to football as part of a first team set-up.

great player

loved him as a player

but he's a clown and if Rafa gives him the job then something has been lost in translation

No way, the guys a ****.

bit unfair that lad. I have to say tho that head of the academy is such an important role that it should be the most qualified, not baised on what anyone did 20 years ago. I'm sure whoever gets the job will have to prove themselves to Rafa. I remember Gary Ablett saying that an interview with Rafa is very tough!

IIRC he did quite well in his early days as a manager (was it Bolton & Coventry he was with ?).

Other than that documentary following Taylor, I have always held him in the highest regards and he was an absolute legend for 12 or 13 seasons with us.

He was down at the front of the Paddock near the dug-out last Sunday when the youth team were parading the cup and then climbed over the barrier and went off with them down the tunnel.

To be fair, Taylor made Nealy look stupid in that documentary. What was he supposed to do when a clearly insane Taylor was asking him silly, inane questions with a camera panned on them.

What he said

How many championship medals have you won for our club?

Certainly wasn't Bolton, my bolton supporting mates think he is an absolute c**k for what he did with them

So you're allowed to be a total a*** if you have lots of medals? ;)

You do a fine job without.

I must have missed the unwritten rule where you can't think any member of your club past or present is an a***. Had contact with Mr Neal on a few occasions, each time he's come out of it in a terrible light, in my eyes anyway.

Phil Neal to Observer journo Jamie Jackson when asked about the Heysel Disaster :

"I'd rather forget that night. It was an ordeal. But, Jamie, why should I help you out? I'm helping you pay your mortgage [by talking to you about Heysel]. When people ask me for my view, they usually have to pay for it. You're asking for my help for nothing. To pay your mortgage, Jamie. I mean, what do you want from me?"

here

That to me confirms his character and not the kind of person i'd want involved in the future of my club.
